A Prayer for the USA

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.  For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.  Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Our church had a prayer walk last week.  It was very well done.  They have been asked to redo the walk for Holy Week.  There were 11 stations, and it involved a walk around the upper floor of the church.  It started with “Women of God,” because the women of the church set the thing up.  “Men of Faith” was the ninth station.

There were experiential elements in that the “Come Thirsty” station had two bowls and several cases of drinking water.  The small bowl was filled with water, and you were supposed to scoop a little water, using a seashell, from the small bowl and pour it into the large bowl, to illustrate spreading the Gospel.  In the sanctuary, a few stations later, beneath a huge cross at the front of the room, they were playing a hymn on a tight loop recording and the words of the hymn were buried within the prayer that was suggested to read for the “Cross” station.  Each station has a prayer to read to get you started on your prayer for that theme.  If you didn’t want to sing the hymn, there was a wooden cross jigsaw puzzle to put together, six wooden pieces, but your hands were moving while praying.

Regardless of your prayer life, you could learn something from such a prayer walk.  While the women set up the prayer walk, over half of the suggested prayers at each station were written by men in the church.  It became a group effort.  I was asked to provide a non-partisan prayer for our country.  I used a saying from a church sign that Wally of Truth in Palmira used in one of his posts.

I have been interested in the discussion that Julie of Cookie Crumbs to Live By has started with regard to late term abortions, but her discussion also raises so many other issues.  Julie’s pleas for prayer have led to others writing about the subject.  I noticed that Kathy of A Time to Share had referenced a post from Citizen Tom in her post on the subject.  The word is spreading, and we can pray that people vote in the next elections based on their beliefs, and maybe write their representatives in the meantime.

I believe that life begins at conception.  But I can support abortion under extreme circumstances, such as a pregnancy that endangers the life of the mother.  It is not totally a black-white issue, but the gray area is extremely thin.  It is sad that once you establish a little gray, some think everything is gray.

It is very hard to square the recent events with the selected Scripture.  Yet, we can easily square recent events with 1 Kings and 2 Kings, the entirety of both books.  God allowed the people of Israel to gather enough rope that they hung themselves.  Does that not sum up those history books?  To make it worse with current history, the liberals have been adding their slant to our history books, as taught to our children – for so long that we can no longer learn from what is in print.  One only learns from one’s mistakes if they know about the mistake and what that mistake costs.  Then again, if you state that a ‘wall (an inanimate object) is immoral’ and applaud babies being killed for no other reason than their inconvenience, are you even sane?

Yet, God is in control.  We need to hold true to the Scripture above.  We must also understand that there is nothing in the book of Revelation that states that the fall of America is the marking of the End Times.  We must set our next step in front of the last as we take our journey of Faith, praying for the leaders that God has allowed to be in charge.  We must pray that wisdom can rise and partisan bickering can cease.  We can pray for sanity to reign.

My prayer, written over a month ago, that I provided for the prayer walk is as follows:

Pray as the Lord leads you.

Dear Lord,

We, the people of the United States, are at a crossroads.  We have eliminated You from our government, from our schools, and from public speaking.  Yet, when times are bad, we turn to You and complain about what You have not done.  Our political parties have established extreme positions.  They stiffen their backs, refusing to budge or negotiate or find any common ground.  Vance Havner once wrote, “A man or woman with an unmovable backbone is in real trouble.  God made backbones that can stand rigid but can also bend when necessary.”  With this in mind, we are in ‘real trouble.’

Yet, there is hope.  Hope can only be found in You.  A church sign reads, “America, the donkey and elephant won’t help.  We must turn back to the Lamb.”  Yes, Lord, may we find Hope in You.  May we find Love in You.  May we place our trust in You.  May we be bold in our speech and when we vote, to vote for candidates that boldly seek Your wisdom.  If there are no such candidates, raise them up, Lord.

As Frank Edwards wrote in his song, Under the Canopy:

Your love has taken over me
Yes I have learnt to depend on you
I’ve got confidence in you
In you oh lord, I put my trust.”

May we place our trust in You, and through You, our nation can be healed.

In Your Name, I pray, Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.

  1. Thank you Mark for the mention and for allowing me to be a part of such great company — a wonderful idea — that of a prayer walk— similar to the stations of the cross —
