Do You Know Jackal Quiz

But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals;
you covered us over with deep darkness.

  • Psalm 44:19

Thorns will overrun her citadels,
    nettles and brambles her strongholds.
She will become a haunt for jackals,
    a home for owls.

  • Isaiah 34:13

“I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals; and I will lay waste the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

  • Jeremiah 9:11

Note: This quiz is not related to the well known game “You Don’t Know Jack!” which can be found online or in a store near you, maybe.

This quiz is about the word “jackals”.  I was thinking of something else, but why not a quiz about a dog-like creature that no one seems to like very much.  At least the references in the Bible are not that complimentary.

The questions are in biblical order, and all the questions are from the Old Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1For the first use of Jackal in the Bible, what outside the Valley Gate did Nehemiah walk by, along with the Dung Gate, as Nehemiah inspected the broken walls of Jerusalem? Hint: It is not the Jackal Gate.
2Why would Job consider himself a brother of jackals and a companion of owls?
3In Psalm 63, King David writes that “they” will die by the sword and be food for jackals.  Who is “they” in regard to this warrior king?
4Isaiah prophesies against a nation and says that “her” house will be a house for jackals, owls will live there, and wild goats will jump about.  What nation?
5What would make a wild donkey stand on the heights and pant like a jackal?
6God’s people are heartless, says the lament.  Even a jackal offers what for their young?
7The lament continues to say that jackals prowl over what Mount?
8According to Ezekiel, who are like jackals among the ruins?
9Because of the sin of the people, the prophet Micah will weep and wail, moan like an owl and do what like a jackal?
10And Malachi says that Israel, God has loved, but who has God hated, whose inheritance is a wasteland left for desert jackals?

I mulled over ideas roaming around in my brain for a quiz idea, and I thought of playing a card game.  There are definitely kings and queens in the Bible, but are there any jacks?  No jacks, but there were nineteen mentions of the word “jackal” in the NIV, all in the Old Testament.

Funny how you start out with one idea that does not work and you get another, but I already have an idea for next week’s quiz with the card game idea.  Oh, yes, I think it might be fun.

Of course, the jackal is a wild relative of the dog.  It usually hunts at night.  Oddly, dogs are mentioned much more often, over twice as often as jackals.  Maybe another quiz idea. …

Throughout these uses of jackals, most of them pertain to nations whose cities or the land in general is overrun by jackals.

Since Jackals hunt at night and you can hear them howl, it paints not just a depressing sight to see jackals everywhere, but a frightening sight as well.  These nations will be truly desolate when the predominant beast is the jackal.

May we take heed and not be a nation that God will leave for the jackals.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video:  Here is Here is C. J. Cregg “doing” The Jackal on the television show, West Wing. Just for the fun of it.

And since the concept of a jackal was frightening in biblical times, here is Zach Williams singing Fear is a Liar.  And the video is a tearjerker.

And here is Kari Jobe singing No Fear.  This video is a little over nine minutes, but it keeps coming back to Turn your eyes upon Jesus, right here, right now, no fear.

Here are Leanna Crawford singing Truth I’m Standing On.
