A Dog’s Life Quiz

Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

  • 2 Samuel 9:8

The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

  • Matthew 15:25-28

This quiz is about the word “dog”.  As mentioned two weeks ago, there are more references to a dog or dogs in the Bible than to a jackal.  Since that week, the quiz was on jackals, why not have a quiz for dogs?

The questions are in biblical order, and all the questions are from the Old Testament, although there were nine references to dogs in the New Testament.

The Questions:

1During what event would dogs not bark at a person or animal among the Israelites, as a sign that God makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel?  This is the first mention of “dog” in the NIV.
2In the Law after the Ten Commandments, the people of Israel are to not eat meat torn by wild animals, but what must they do to it?
3Gideon had his soldiers drink water from a stream.  Some cupped the water in their hands and lapped it like a dog and some got on their knees to drink directly from the stream.  Which group became the 300 soldiers that would attack the Midianites?
4Who asked David, “Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?”
5As David and his men were escaping, Shimei approached, cursing David.  Abishai asked who the dead dog was who was cursing David, wanting to kill him, but David said that if God had told him to curse David, who were they to stop him?  The question is: From whom had they escaped?
6Who issued the prophecy to the house of Ahab that dogs would lick his blood where Naboth’s blood was spilled, Jezebel would be eaten by dogs, and their offspring would be eaten by dogs in the cities and birds in the countryside?
7Before Hazael murders Ben-Hadad to become king of Aram and then attack Israel, he called himself a mere dog when approached by God’s prophet.  Who told him what would soon happen as he wept, knowing the events would happen?
8The book of Job is the only Bible reference to a type of dog, at least the function for which these dogs were used, if not a specific breed.  What type of dogs?
9In a graphic Messianic prophecy, what (or who) pierces his hands and feet in Psalm 22?
10Fools repeat their folly as dogs return to their what?

The painting in the image above is a painting made by my paternal grandmother.  She had been a school marm in a one-room schoolhouse for most of her life.  She loved sketching and took lessons by mail in art, from sketching to painting in oils (still art, landscapes, action scenes and portraits).  I was too young to sit in one position for too long, so my Dad photographed me playing with the dogs.  Mammy, what we called his mother, then painted the painting, only having me pose for the facial details that she was looking for.

The painting shows that I grew up with a lot of dogs around me, but most of them rarely survived much past being puppies.  My parents and grandparents believed dogs should be outside, and hunting dogs, especially, should be free to roam and hunt.  Inevitably the dogs would be run over by cars and trucks going down the new highway in front of our new home and turkey farm, but for over twenty years, we maintained a few dogs that were the smartest, at least those who knew to avoid the motor vehicles.

There are nine references to dogs in the New Testament, but most of them are poignant.

The story from Matthew above is a Canaanite woman begging Jesus to heal her daughter, and Jesus heals the girl due to the faith of this woman from a tribe that had been cursed in the time of Moses, “dogs” indeed.  The same story is in the book of Mark.

The Sermon on the Mount talks of feeding pearls to swine, but that analogy is preceded by not giving sacred things to dogs.

In Luke 16, Jesus says that even the dogs licked the open sores of Lazarus in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

One of Peter’s epistles quotes the verse referenced in the last question of the quiz.  Paul refers to mutilators as “dogs”, and he is referring to those who insist on circumcision.  Paul himself was circumcised, but he fought this “mutilation” so that salvation would never be considered in any part with “works.”  Salvation is by faith alone.

The last reference to dogs is in the last chapter of the Bible, where those who wash their robes can eat of the fruit of the Tree of Life, but not so those dogs, those who are “outside” who practice sexual immorality, magic arts, idolators, murderers, and those who love and practice falsehood.

And along that same vein, here is Clayton Hackle singing Dogs Go to Heaven.

And here is Mark Lowry explains why Dogs go to Heaven.
