Sacrifice Quiz

Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.”

  • Leviticus 9:7

The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. The Levites took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock. On that day the people of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.?

  • 1 Samuel 6:15-16

When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

  • 2 Samuel 6:13-15

Three times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord, burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.

  • 1 Kings 9:25

Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

  • 2 Kings 3:27

The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

  • 2 Kings 14:4

This quiz is about the word “hope”.  Just kidding, it is a quiz about “sacrifice”.  I was joking last week about having Scriptures on one subject and then having the quiz on something completely different.  I suggested a quiz on sacrifices, and that all the questions would be from Leviticus, but the Scriptures above contain only one Scripture from Leviticus.

I am doing something a little different.  I am going to ask a question about each of the Scriptures that have just been quoted.  And then, to make the quiz halfway about Leviticus, I will end with questions from that book.  So the first question and the last four all come from Leviticus.

The Questions:

1In Leviticus 9, Aaron makes offerings and then he turns to the people of Israel and requests offerings.  What is being commemorated?
2In 1 Samuel 6:16, five Philistine kings watched the Levites take the Ark and what sacrifices were made, but why only then did they return home?
3King David, overcome with Joy that the Ark had been returned, danced in a linen ephod (half naked).  Who took offense to this, despising David, and would die childless?
4The verse about Solomon’s three annual sacrifices is wedged between building a terraced palace for Pharoah’s daughter and building ships that went where to obtain gold?
5Who rebelled against Israel (the northern kingdom) which led to three kings joining forces to repel the rebellion, leading this king to sacrificing his own son, heir to the throne, to signify his defeat?
6Other than this failure, this king was a good king.  This verse is followed by putting to death those who had killed his father, Joash.  Was this a king of Judah or Israel?
7The first use of sacrifice in the book of Leviticus is for what type of offering, offering a young bull, if an appointed priest brings guilt to the people of Israel?
8If you have any meat left over on the third day of a fellowship offering, what must be done to it?
9How must a thank offering be an acceptable sacrifice?
10Leviticus 23:37 marks the conclusion of the rules regarding burnt offerings, grain offerings, sacrifices, and drink offerings required on what days of each year?

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

  • 1 John 4:10

This is the good news.  But it is not the last time the word “sacrifice” is in the Bible.  The NIV uses “sacrifice” in Revelation twice.  Both times referencing sacrifices to idols.  You would think that making such sacrifices are a thing of the past, but there is a growing trend, mostly in Satanic worship.  But some so-called Christian churches have made a grand celebration in making sacrifices to trans gender gods in order to lure them into the church.

We have made inclusivity an ugly word and a religion in and of itself.  We should welcome people, all people, to lay down their sins and repent (turn away from their sins), never to celebrate those sins.  We should never forget that we were once sinners in need of the blood of Christ to be redeemed ourselves, and so should all those who enter the church.

Yes, all are welcome.  All can be redeemed.  Salvation is by Grace through faith, and not by works.  But an outpouring of the Holy Spirit entering our hearts is to convict us of our sin and to give us the power to turn from that sin and resist temptation.

Note: Questions 8 and 9 make me reconsider those huge meals that last four days or more on Thanksgiving Day.

Many pastors today are changing the invitation for salvation.  True, you cannot buy your salvation, but is salvation free?  It cannot be bought.  It cannot be earned.  No amount of works can bring you close to salvation.

But there is a cost.  When we commit ourselves totally to God, He is going to start cleaning house, but it will not be a “sacrifice” as it will be a labor of love, to jettison the sinful things of this world and cling to those things that are lasting.  Our love for Jesus is one thing we can take with us to the next life.

All the things of this world will be left behind, but as we serve God here on this earth, treasures will be stored for us in Heaven.
