The family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, who were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph, came and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the Israelite families. They said, “When the Lord commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, he ordered you to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. Now suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. And so part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken away. When the Year of Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to that of the tribe into which they marry, and their property will be taken from the tribal inheritance of our ancestors.”
- Numbers 36:1-4
Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. He also took from Jerusalem to Babylon the king’s mother, his wives, his officials and the prominent people of the land. The king of Babylon also deported to Babylon the entire force of seven thousand fighting men, strong and fit for war, and a thousand skilled workers and artisans. He made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah.
- 2 Kings 24:15-17
The first Scripture may confuse people, but these women wanted the inheritance due their father. They did not want to marry other men and have the inheritance through their husband’s clan. Their father’s inheritance and his name would die with him if that happened. Thus, “name” is rather important.
In the second Scripture, Mattaniah’s name is virtually erased from the record books. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we remember the names Nebuchadnezzar gave them instead of their given Hebrew names. This placed Babylonian power over these people. They did not even have a name except for their Babylonian name, thus making it less likely for them to rebel. But Zedekiah did rebel and Daniel’s three friends would rather die than bow down to the statue of Nebuchadnezzar.
This quiz is an acrostic quiz, of sorts. The Old Testament questions provide answers, and the first letter of these answers spell out the reason for these quizzes. The answer is in the plural.
But for each letter of the mystery words (a two word answer) , there is also a New Testament question. Two of these questions refer to Old Testament characters that are mentioned in the Matthew genealogy. I might have found obscure Christians that Paul greets at the beginning or ending of his letters, but making a question about someone only mentioned once, and then only by “Greet ‘this person’ who has been a faithful servant of the Lord. That kind of question could mean anyone.
The Questions:
| OT Question | Bible Ref. | Answers | Init. | Answers | Bible Ref. | NT Question | |
| 1 | Jeremiah’s Scribe | The encourager who invited Saul (Paul) to Antioch | |||||
| 2 | Prophet who advised Hezekiah, and wrote a long book of prophecy | Actually the father of the betrayer of Jesus, known by the betrayer second name | |||||
| 3 | Who had a donkey talk to him | Also known as Nathaniel, one of the Twelve | |||||
| 4 | Third son of Jacob and ancestor of Moses and Aaron | Wrote a Gospel and one other book, was a physician | |||||

| 8 | King of Judah who became leprous for his pride in burning incense in the temple | Not part of Jesus’ bloodline but mentioned in the Matthew genealogy as being the former husband of a wife of King David | |||||
| 9 | King of all Israel who once killed a giant | The surname of the Apostle Thomas, meaning twin | |||||
| 10 | Son of Abram through the Egyptian Slave Hagar | Second person mentioned in the Matthew genealogy as the son of Abraham | |||||
| 11 | Queen of Persia who saved the Jews from destruction | Mother of John the Baptist (Baptizer) | |||||
| 12 | Wife and half-sister of Abraham and mother of the NT question 10 answer | First Christian martyr stoned to death |
This quiz was fun to write, but it was extremely hard. Some of the answers may be a bit obscure. But like an acrostic style puzzle, you have two questions that can yield the letters of the ultimate answer. And once you get enough letters, you can probably figure out the ultimate answer. This then gives you the first letter of the quiz question answers.
Some of these acrostic type things use letters that are rare, that is as starting letters. I have used both Roman governors of Judah in past quizzes, Festus and Felix. Otherwise, the only other “F” is an obscure comment for Fortunatus (1 Corinthians 16:17), all Roman words.
These quizzes probably do not translate well into other languages. Such names as Joshua, Joseph, James, John, and even Jesus may not start with the letter “J”. But even staying with English translations of Hebrew, Greek, and Romans names, some of the letters of the alphabet are rare letters to start names. Thus hidden messages with an “F,” “O,” “U,” or “Y” are rare, but one of those is used in this quiz.

These types of quizzes more than double the work in writing them. Restricting one set of answers with the Old Testament and the other set of answers with the New Testament, it makes it more difficult. But I like that, in that if you have not learned anything by taking this quiz, I have.
I write a lot of posts where I am not the expert at following what I preach. I am sitting right there on the front row thinking that I need to work harder on this one or that one.
And I suspect that we all do.

The mystery message is “Bible Studies.” My hope is that if you enjoy these quizzes and you cannot get all the answers, then you can study the Bible references to find the answers you did not know. I have certainly learned a lot since I started writing these quizzes, more than 150 quizzes ago.
Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, … Here is the Redeemed Quartet singing Just a Little Talk with Jesus.
And here is the Redeemed Quartet singing I’ve Never Been This Homesick Before.
And here is Josh Groban singing You Raise Me Up.
And here is The Old Country Church. It is sung by the Gaither Homecoming Crowd, with too many soloists to count them all.

Wow! I had to really focus to follow what you were showing us, Mark. I’m thinking that is a gift. I get “locked in” on a subject and drill down so to speak, but you’re going through just the names and I have never done that. Well maybe a couple of times but not like this. It opens one’s eyes to what we read and pass over, doesn’t it! Thank you for the time and effort that you put into these quizzes! Blessings!

Yes, just got back home after babysitting in Tennessee for three weeks. They are all back in school (son teaching and 3 kids attending). The present exhaustion will fade after driving for two days to get back home. As you say, one day at a time.
