David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.

Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might.

  • Psalm 54:1

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
    burst into jubilant song with music;
make music to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,
with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—
shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

  • Psalm 98:4-6

My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul.

  • Psalm 108:1

This quiz is about the word “music.”  It appears 128 times in the NIV, rarely in the New Testament (3 times).  It can be in the form of music, musician(s), and musical, as in musical instruments.  Actually, In the psalms for roughly half of the total references in the NIV, it is not part of the Psalm itself but instruction to the music director, as seen in the Psalm 54 Scripture above.

Music has been part of worship since early history.  Exodus 15 is the song of Moses and Miriam after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea.  King David was a musician and composer, incorporating music into worship.  Music is a natural thing to incorporate into any celebration.

Song is mentioned over 100 times in the NIV.  There are two new songs introduced in John’s Revelation.

While some people in Revelation are described as playing harps, I do not think that will be everyone’s job, but I have a feeling we will be so Joyous that we will all wish to sing in Heaven.

This post will come out after my son’s second full week as the new choir and orchestra director at a Middle School near his home in Tennessee.  Due to issues involving his former school, he was allowed to affect a transfer.

Time will only tell if the position is going to be better, but under the circumstances, it could hardly be worse.

He is excited about the change.  He is already wiping off the dust on the violin and gathering music ideas to work with the choir.

He is also hoping to incorporate some of the things he was doing at the elementary level with a greater focus on more detailed work.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, … Here is Guy Penrod, Larry Ford, and Larnelle Harris singing I Will Sing of My Redeemer.  And the Gaither Homecoming Crowd are backing them up.  These music selections a designed to be a bit eclectic: Southern Gospel with a choir (of sorts), a quartet, a hymn, and an instrumental with bagpipes and orchestra.

Maybe each time we talk with Jesus, it turns to song in His ears.  Here is the Redeemer Quartet with Just a Little Talk with Jesus.

And here is God of Our Fathers sung by the Gaither Homecoming Crowd.  I think this is the Carnegie Hall performance soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Here is the Czestochowa Pipes and Drums with symphony orchestra playing Amazing Grace.  From a concert in Poland.
