There is a double meaning in the C. S. Lewis quote.
Once Christ is within us, we are never just ourselves. Jesus is within us, and He will never forsake us.
But something happens within us when we accept Jesus. Love fills our heart, and we must share that love. As Jeremiah wrote, it is a fire within us that cannot be held within us. It must come out. It emerges in different ways for each of us, but it must come out.
And in so doing, we are not just living for ourselves, we are living for someone else. We cannot all be great evangelists who bring hundreds, thousands, millions to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. But we can be the one that shows love for a neighbor. That neighbor may not know Jesus. That neighbor may not accept Jesus as their Savior, but our job is to show that love.
For we do not see life through just our own eyes. We see life through the eyes of others. We weep when they weep. We cheer when they cheer. And we laugh together.
