  • Psalm 47:4

He loved to pronounce a curse— may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing— may it be far from him.

  • Psalm 109:17

This is a quiz about verses containing the word “loved.”  But the question could be who or what was loved for some of the questions.  Only one question applies to loving something inanimate.

The questions are in biblical order.  Only the last question is not from the Old Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1In the first reference to “loved” in the NIV, who took his bride into the tent and loved her, providing comfort after his mother had passed away?
2The couple in question one had two sons, and they were guilty of having favorites.  Who loved whom in each case?
3God saw that of the two wives, that this man had, he had not loved the one, loving the other.  As a result, the one who was not loved had a fertile womb while the loved one was barren for a long time.  Who are the three?
4Who was loved more by the one in question 2 (loved by the mother) and in question 3 (who loved one wife and not the other)?
5In Deuteronomy, it states that due to the fact that God loved these people, He brought the Israelites out of Egypt?
6Elkanah gave a double-portion of what to Hannah because he loved her and she was barren?
7We are commanded to love our neighbor as ourself, but in the Old Testament these two friends are said to have that kind of love for each other?
8What good king of Judah loved growing crops?  Hint: His reign was the second longest in Judah, only to Manasseh.
9Which of Hosea’s three children was given the name “not loved”?
10We speak of loving God, but…  How should we first look at it?

In amongst these questions we have three questions in a row that speak of favoritism.

Favoritism is not a good thing.  It causes a lot of trouble, but then, what if the one child loves doing the things Dad does while the other child loves doing things that Mom does?  That might be a wonderful thing as those skills can be passed along, but it could lead to an imbalance in gifts that the children might readily see.

But then, it is not all the parents’ fault.  If one child knows, early on, how to manipulate the parents, often both of them, then that child can be conceived as the favorite, breeding jealousy in the other child.  Then as the other child retaliates, the punishment creates a deeper gulf in the overall family dynamic.

But God does not have favorites.  He simply loves us.  Yet, it sometimes seems that way, but we each have our trials in life.

The first two Bible verses quoted above are immediately after the female in the “relationship” was raped.  Rape is not an act of love at all, but in the first case, Shechem, son of Hamor, raped Dinah, but he still had interest in her as his wife.  His heart was drawn to her, and he talked with her. But this was after the rape.  Things did not end well for Shechem after Simeon and Levi found out about it.

But in the second case, Amnon desired Tamar, who was Absalom’s younger sister.  Amnon raped her, but once he saw her as a tainted woman, he hated her.  So, there probably was only lust for her in the first place, not love at all.  Maybe Amnon only wanted the bragging rights of the conquest to remove her virginity.  Again, it did not work well for the rapist as Absalom had Amnon killed.  Then once Absalom had gotten away with murder, he thought he could take over the kingdom, and for a while David had to run for his life.

While Shechem might have been guilty of “date rape”, Amnon’s sin was more aggressive and brutal.  Yet, rape is an act of aggression, and not love.  When the party who does not want to go any further says “No” that should be the end of it.
