On the fiftieth anniversary of becoming a Christian, I put on a Comedy Show at our church.  I paid homage to Justin Wilson, Jerry Clower, Ken Davis, and Mark Lowry, but I threw in some of my own humor also.  Then I ended with my testimony.

My Dad’s job status changed a lot when I was growing up and we moved a few times.  All of this was after we lost the turkey farm when I was in first / second grade.  And I never remember my mother smiling, other than for a rare photograph, like at my wedding, and she bickered about how the photographer was so bossy, but in the photo above, I am saying, “If that cameraman doesn’t stop taking pictures, I am going to shove his camera up his backside.”  Yes, he won some awards for one of those wedding pictures, but our reception was about two-three hours long and it was posing for photographs for ninety percent of that time.  And the other ten percent was sneaking off to change.  I don’t think I drank any of the punch.  And eating the cake was only a photo op.  By then, everyone in the photo agreed with me.

But I made a comedy sketch out of when my mother first saw Gladys Ormphby and Tyrone F. Horneigh.  When Gladys started beating Tyrone with her purse, I thought my mother was having a heart attack.  I went to the phone, a party line, to call for an ambulance, long before 911.  While I was thumbing through the phone book, she recovered enough to say, “Put the phone down, idiot! I was just laughing.”  I knew not to talk back to my mother, but I wanted to say, “Excuse me!  I’ve never seen you do that before!!!”  Of course, I hammed up the whole thing, but the whole thing was true, from as early as I could remember until I was sixteen, and I had never seen my mother laugh.

About a year later, I became a Christian although I had been in church most of my life.

The kids at school had, almost all of them, accepted Jesus and they had Joy, and in our home, I voraciously studied comedy in all forms, not knowing that Joy came from the Lord and a moment of laughter was a poor substitute.  I finally surrendered to Jesus, giving up on my hundreds of times saying the salvation prayer.

Now, I can have Joy in the midst of sorrow, Joy while suffering, for Jesus is in my heart.

And here is Mark Lowry performing I Survived a Tornado.

And here is Chonda Pierce performing Laugh-Cry-Love.

And here is Tim Hawkins performing Wrong Psalm.

Laughter and fun people like these have taught me to “lighten up”. I was in Youth For Christ (same era and both in Minnesota), as Ken in YFC. Someone, in our state meeting, said “Hey Ken’s leaving YFC and going into comedy”…Someone else…”Oh, that’s funny”. The rest is history. The Lord has used him well. I always wondered if Jesus had a favorite joke with his disciples.

My goofiest times, and hopefully funny, are when times are tough. It gets my mind off what is going on, and I have had others thank me for being goofy because I had basically told them that it isn’t “that” bad. And I get a lot of that watching Christian comedians, We need to confess our sins, but we need to learn how to laugh at our mistakes – learning from both. And thank you for working with YFC, a great organization.
