Who Knows What Evil Lurks Quiz

There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.

  • Job 34:22

They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.

  • Psalm 144:4

Each one will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.

  • Isaiah 32:2

“Prepare for battle against her! Arise, let us attack at noon! But, alas, the daylight is fading, and the shadows of evening grow long.

  • Jeremiah 6:4

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

  • James 1:17

To tie in the title, the beginning of the old long-running radio show, and the short lived television show, The Shadow, was an eerie voice, most memorable was Orson Welles, who asks and answers the question, “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?  The Shadow knows.”  I did a quiz about darkness a few weeks ago and Light about a year ago.  And then, I remembered something I had said in Sunday school, which applies to me as much as anyone else, that we need to repent of those sins that we do in the shadows where we might not think anyone is watching.  Bad thoughts might be high on that list, and you do not even need the shadows.  I had no idea why I went in the direction during our Sunday school conversation, but if the class did not take it to heart, I did, and thus, the theme of this quiz as a follow-up.

This is a quiz about verses containing the word “shadow.”

The questions are in biblical order.  And all but the last three of the questions are from the Old Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1In the first reference to ‘shadow’ in the NIV, Gaal, who rebelled against Abimelek, son of Jerub-Baal (Gideon), sees soldiers coming off the mountain, but Zebul tried to convince him they are the shadows of what playing tricks on him.
2Hezekiah is sick and he prays that God will grant him more years to rule over Judah, and what does God do with a shadow to prove He will grant Hezekiah’s request?
3Who laments in first Chronicles that our days are like a shadow, without hope?
4To ensure no loads entered the gates on the Sabbath, what did Nehemiah do as evening shadows fell on the gates before the Sabbath?
5In Psalm 11, what do the wicked shoot at as they place an arrow in their bows while in the shadows?
6Ecclesiastes says that the life of the wicked will not grow like a shadow due to not doing what?
7Isaiah suggests that as heat is reduced by a shadow of a cloud, what happens to the song of the ruthless.
8Jesus quoted Isaiah 9:1-2, which in the NIV does not use the word shadow.  But Jesus speaks in the land of the shadow of what a light has dawned?
9In Acts is says that people would bring the sick and place their mats so that whose shadow might pass over the sick to heal them?
10And Hebrews claims that the law is a mere shadow of the good things that are coming.  Shadows instead of what?

Shadows are used as a metaphor for a variety of things.

To get the quiz title out of the way, the shadow is where evil lurks.

But shadows are fleeting.  A cloud comes along, and your shadow disappears, but then, that means you are in the shadow of the cloud.  The shadow being here one moment and gone the next is a metaphor for our lives.

In biblical times, shadows and the length of shadows were means of telling time.  Lengthy shadows meant that the sun would soon set.

But shadows also provide an image of something.  The shadow is not the thing, but an image of it.  Thus, a shadow gives us a glimpse of something that we might not have experienced yet.

As for another hint for the last question, I could have used Colossians 2:17, where it talks about shadows of things that are to come.  Hebrews 8 talks about Jesus as the high priest.  When the priest goes into the sanctuary (Hebrews 8:5), he serves in a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven.

C. S. Lewis wrote to an American Lady and said something about how we are living in a dream world.  And some day we will hear the cock crow and we will awaken into a real world, a Technicolor world as if the colors in this world were dim and lifeless.
