A Rose by Any Other Name Quiz

Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

  • Genesis 4:17

In those days Israel had no king.
Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there.
On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go.” So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.” And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.
Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

  • Judges 19:1-10

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

  • Matthew 27:19

About the title, “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” is a William Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet.

This is a quiz about women in the Bible, but half of these women that are described in the “Questions” are never named in the Bible.  The others may be obscure characters, maybe even influential characters, but the name is mentioned so seldom that you may have never noticed.

It is one thing just to identify those women who are never named in the Bible.  Then for the more advanced, or the gluttons for research, what are the names of the women who are identified by name?

There are ten descriptions in the questions column.  This may be a single woman or a group of women.  For the first part of the quiz, identify which are nameless and which are specifically named.  The second part, if you choose to go that far, give the name of the woman being described or the names of each woman in the group.

The questions are in biblical order.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1Noah’s and Noah’s Son’s Wives
2Daughter of Haran & wife of Nahor & grandmother of Rebekah and Laban
3Lot’s Daughters
4Zelophehad’s five daughters. Zelophehad was the grandson of Gilead, grandson of Manasseh.  Having only daughters when he died, the daughters requested a special dispensation to not lose their father’s inheritance.
5Wife of Manoah, once barren, then mother of Samson, visited by an angel on two occasions while her husband was not working in the field with her.
6Wife of Hezekiah and mother of Manasseh, king of Judah, who reigned 55 years
7A prostitute and wife of Hosea who bore him three children
8Jairus’ Daughter who died and Jesus brought back to life
9Woman of Samaria at the well who Jesus offered living water
10A Servant of Mary, John Mark’s mother, who answered a knock at the door, recognized it was Peter’s voice, but did not open the door, running to tell the others instead.

Not being named in the Bible does not mean that the person was not important.  Within the first genealogy, from Adam to Noah, we have wives and daughters being mentioned.  These became the mothers of the next generation.  Yet, some of the wives of later generations are mentioned.

Some of these unnamed women were women of faith.  Some of them were shown to have greater character than the male counterpart, or so it seems from the narrative.

As mentioned in the first break (between the Questions and the Bible References) an unnamed person in the Bible does not diminish their importance, but the opposite can also be true.  Named people in the Scriptures are not necessarily important either.

In the most recent Bible Study (Acts 25-26), we see Bernice, sister of King Agrippa II.  She is also his consort, having an incestuous relation with him simply to obtain the title of Queen.

While the governor Felix listened to Paul on many occasions for two years while Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea, his wife Drusilla, a Jew, did not contribute to the conversation, possibly being able to explain what Paul was talking about.
