“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
- Matthew 22:36-40
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
- Romans 10:9-11
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- Philippians 4:6-7
Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
- 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13
“Let someone
Start believing in you
Let him hold out his hand
Let him touch you and
Watch What Happens
One Someone
Who can look in your eyes
And see into your heart
Let him find you and
Watch What Happens
Cold?
No I won’t believe your heart is cold
Maybe just afraid to be broken again
Let Someone
With a deep love to give
Give that deep love to you,
And what magic you’ll see
Let Someone
With a deep love to give
Give that deep love to you,
And what magic you’ll see
Let someone give his heart
Someone who cares like me
Someone who cares like me
(You’re gonna love what happens – Probably added by Frank Sinatra)”
- Norman Gimbel, Watch What Happens
It is with our heart that we believe. As friends of mine said on mission trips, it is that tremendously long distance of eighteen inches from the head to the heart that makes all the difference in whether you are saved or not.
And you cannot walk those eighteen inches on your own. You cannot demand God into your heart. You must quit fighting it and surrender. God never enters someone’s heart unless they are willing.
But now to the lines in the song. The song says that we should let someone start believing in us. God has always believed in us from before the world began, but the someone that God believes in has nothing but potential. They are sinners who cannot even effectively repent of their sin without the power of God within them, but God still believes in us that once we surrender our will to His, we can achieve great things through God’s strength. To borrow a line from the song, watch what happens.
That first verse ends with the “Someone”, whom we will relate to God, reaching out His hand and touching this person who is unsure of God’s love. In an interview with Gloria Gaither, who wrote the words to He Touched Me, she said that there is something mindboggling and very intimate that an almighty God, the Creator of the universe, to reach down and touch us. The Gaither song became my favorite song soon after I accepted Jesus, just for that intimacy that God loved me enough to touch me. And once touched, watch what happens.
And who can look into our eyes and see into our heart, other than God Himself. We can look into someone’s eyes and guess, maybe with a fifty-fifty chance, but I think less than 50:50 for we have our desire that trumps what our eyes see. And that verse ends with letting God find us. We are lost, but God knows where we are. Yet, we need to be found or we do not know that the eighteen inches from our head to our heart is something that is important. But once we do know in our hearts, watch what happens.
Is our heart cold? It might be. We might have tried other things to warm our heart, but only God can make a lasting difference, that difference that lasts forever. And once God delivers that deep love that surpasses all understanding, watch what happens.
Here is Sandler and Young singing Watch What Happens. Sandler is singing most of it in French. This duo was popular when I was a teenager, and I loved them. I tried to get my wife (who was multilingual) to sing Ave Maria while I sang I Believe like Sandler and Young did, but she lacked confidence.
But then again, you might not follow the tune with two people singing the song in two different languages. Here is Ol’ Blue Eyes singing it. You know, the Voice, the Sultan of Swoon, The Chairman of the Board, Swoonatra. Okay, for you youngsters, Frank Sinatra.
Quit fighting. Surrender to God’s Will. Have that “All In” moment with no turning back.
And Watch What Happens!
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
