A member of the Sunday school class where I teach asked me to research “anointing” in the Scriptures. She heard of anointing people in a ritual of healing. I think she wanted to know if there was validity over the practice.
The only two verses are the one that is the focus of question 9 in the quiz and in James 5:14, where someone has a sick person in the house. They summon the elders who then come anointing everyone, and then praying for the healing of the sick person.
But in the process of looking for more, I found a way of categorizing the anointings of the Bible. This may not be original, but it makes sense. You could anoint people, places, things, and varying purposes for the anointing. Within the people category, there are kings and priests who get anointed, but then anyone can be anointed considering James 5 if they invite the elders to pray for a sick person. People are also anointed for burial. Thus blessings and burial are purposes of anointment.
Under places, there is the first question where someone is overcome by a dream, and they pour oil over a pillar of stone. Under things, there are constructed things for the worship of God that are anointed in the process of consecration, thus consecration becomes a purpose.
But in 2 Chronicles 22:7, it records the reason for Jehu being anointed differently from 1 King 19:16. Elijah anoints three people. Hazael was anointed king of Aram, but Ben-Hadad was king at the time. Jehu was anointed king of Israel, but Ahab was king at the time. Elisha was anointed to be God’s prophet after Elijah. In the next verses, it talks about that Ahab’s reign ends when Hazael defeats him. Jehu, becoming king wipes out most of Ahab’s family, and Elisha kills the rest. But in 2 Chronicles 22:7, it states that Jehu was anointed to destroy the family of Ahab. Thus, in an odd way, destruction becomes a purpose of anointing, although becoming king was also part of that.
But a special kind of anointing is covered in question 10. That type of anointment covers all believers, or it should at one time or another.

One reference to “anoint” in the Bible is that of the Anointed One. It is capitalized only twice out of fourteen occurrences. It is mentioned in the plural twice, both times (1 Chronicles 16:22 and Psalm 105:15) it talks about doing my prophets no harm.
So, the anointed one could be referring to prophets, but in other references it is clearly priests or kings.
But it can reference Jesus Christ who was our Prophet, Priest, and King. And maybe it could refer to a king and The King of kings.
Half of the references to the anointed one are in the Psalms. With the imagery of David’s poetry, it might have multiple meanings.
