As a hint for question 4, Zacchaeus gave back how many fold more than he have stolen from others as a tax collector? He must have likened it to sheep that he had slaughtered. An ox that is stolen and then slaughtered must be repaid with five head of cattle.
For a hint for question 7, do not get caught up in Jesus’ ongoing verbal battle with the religious leaders, Pharisees and Sadducees.
“Sheep,” as a distinct word, is mentioned in roughly two thirds of the Old Testament books, but even with Jesus calling us His sheep, the New Testament only mentions “sheep” in one third of the books. Perhaps this is due to the price for our sin being paid by the Lamb of God.
Three books in the Bible almost account for one third of the mentions of “sheep.” First Samuel (21) has the most mentions of “sheep,” much of it talking about David tending sheep and then protecting the shepherds and their flocks in Judah while running from Saul. A tie for second is between Genesis (19) and John (19).

My wife and I enjoyed going to our local library. While I poured over the mystery section, she roamed the entire library. She brought home a video that was on a short-term rental list, Super Sheep by Ken Davis.
For an hour he complains that God calls us sheep. He grew up on a farm and they had sheep. As the hilarious sermon (too profound to be called a comedy routine) progresses, he says things like “I don’t want to be a geeky, dumb, can’t run right, scared, weakling of a sheep!”
He builds one unflattering attribute after another. To prove how we are just like sheep, and we need a Savior. We need Jesus.

The Answers:
| Question | Bible References | Answers | |
| 1 | In the first use of “sheep” in the NIV, who gives Abram sheep, servants, etc. in exchange for whom? | Genesis 12:16 | The first time Abram called his wife his sister, Pharoah gave Abram a lot when he took Sarai into the palace, but then everyone became seriously ill. |
| 2 | When Abraham uses the same ruse that he used in question 1, this time with Abimelech, what is the chief difference in timing of the generous gift of sheep, slaves, etc.? | Genesis 20:14 | Pharoah gave Abraham sheep as a purchase price for Sarah. Abimelech gave sheep as a guilt offering after he found out she was the wife of Abraham. |
| 3 | What is significant about Abraham giving sheep to Abimelech, and why was the well called Beersheba? | Genesis 21:22-31 | Abimelech and his military commander feared the God of Abraham. They swore an oath at Beersheba as a treaty among Abraham and Abimelech. Beersheba means well of the oath or well of the seven. Seven ewes were set aside, not part of the gift to Abimelech, signifying the oath. |
| 4 | In the laws after the Ten Commandments were proclaimed, how many sheep must be returned if someone steals a sheep and slaughters it? | Exodus 22:1 | Four sheep, but in verse four, if a stolen sheep is found in your flock, you repay two sheep. |
| 5 | The firstborn son and firstborn of unclean animals were to be redeemed, but why not cows, sheep, and goats? | Numbers 18:17 | They are holy. |
| 6 | What city was totally destroyed by Joshua and the Israelite army, including all the cattle, sheep and donkeys? | Joshua 6:21 | Jericho, only other mention of sheep in the book of Joshua was in destroying the sinner Achan, his family, his sheep, and even his tent (Joshua 7:24). |
| 7 | Jesus warns of wolves in sheep’s clothing. Who is He referring to? | Matthew 7:15 | False prophets |
| 8 | When Paul writes to the Roman church, he speaks of persecution being like sheep to the slaughter. What Bible book is he quoting? | Romans 8:36 | Psalms, Psalms 44:22 specifically |
| 9 | What Old Testament prophet does Peter quote when he calls the pagan converts, sheep going astray? | 1 Peter 2:25 | Isaiah, Isaiah 53:6, to be specific. Jeremiah 50:6 mentions sheep going astray, but the shepherds led the sheep astray. |
| 10 | In the last use of “sheep” in the NIV, who has fallen so that every type of merchandise imaginable cannot be bought or sold? | Revelation 18:13 | Babylon. Definitely used as a metaphor for the marketing industry as a whole and the greed that goes with it. |
Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Ken Davis preaching his “sermon” Super Sheep. It is well worth the hour. He will explain why we “need to be driven with a minute by minute, day by day, commitment to Jesus Christ.”
And here is Voice of Eden singing In God’s Green Pastures, His Sheep am I. I love this video in that two of the men in the back are getting into the song so much, the other men are being distracted by them. When I was in the choir at Gerszewski Barracks, Knielingen, Karlsruhe, West Germany, that would be the other tenor and me. The choir director kept telling “the two clowns” to just sing the hymn. She couldn’t kick us out of the choir. We were the only tenors.
And here is the Cowboy Church of Ennis, Texas singing That One Lost Sheep.
And here is the Church of Almighty God singing God’s Sheep Hear His Voice.
