Remember the line from a television game show … “I can name that tune in three notes.”  Well, this is NOT that game.  The first hint is that the mountain to be named is named in the Bible.  Then the “Question” is something that happened on that mountain.  Then the Bible Reference, without looking it up, should help.

This will be a matching quiz.  Some of the answers might be obscure, but once you have matched enough of the mountains, what is left might strike a memory or two.

The questions are in biblical order.  The answers for the match selections are in alphabetical order.

When I was trying to come up with an idea for the Babs and Harold Conversation that appeared yesterday, I remembered that they had gone through the mountains the previous week.  There would be more mountains along their journey, but the conversation focused around the Grand Canyon instead.  But the idea of mountains popped into my head and this matching quiz struck my attention.  It breaks up the quizzes based on a particular word, at least in part.

The mountain in the photograph above was taken at just the right time.  That year, there seemed to be an eternal winter or early spring in Europe.  The days were cool and cloudy.  My wife suggested that we take a day to see the Swiss Alps.  It was overcast and cold, very cold for June, but I thought, ‘Maybe a miracle can happen.’

We arrived in Grindelwald, a beautiful town in the Swiss Alps.  We saw the base of the Eiger and the Jungfrau.  The Mönch was somewhere in there.  Everything above the base of the mountain was covered in clouds.  My wife suggested we go down a farm road to get a little closer. After about the first two curves in the road, there was barbed wire almost to the car doors on either side.  Cattle were grazing beyond the wire.  A car was coming in the opposite direction, and, seeing the typical tag for an American service person, they backed up into a barn area.  We went to that barn area, waving and thanking them.  They laughed in return.  It must have been a common occurrence for them.

We got out of the car, and I prayed that we would not waste this wonderful trip.  At that moment, I focused the camera on the Jungfrau and a shaft of light appeared.  It looked as if God reached a finger down so we could see the mountains.

On the return trip home that afternoon, we descended toward Lucerne.  We had wished to stop there, but we were back in the middle of a cloud, hardly able to see a few feet beyond the hood of the car.  But we had one miracle and it was worth the trip for that.

I was always a mountain person, as opposed to the beach person.  We had cousins that lived near the beach in Florida, so I saw a lot of the beach when I was growing up.  But the trips to the Rockies were the most memorable trips.

And I think that held true in my adult life, living closer to the beach when we had children, but since then, there were mountains nearby.

When living West Richland, Washington, on a clear day, I could see the Blue Mountains of Oregon in the distance from my front porch.  Not now as the trees in the neighborhood obscure the view (having visited a little over ten years ago).  But on one trip to visit a cousin in Seattle, Washington, she invited me to the porch outside her kitchen.  It was again a miraculous sight for the Seattle area.  I was able to see Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and Mount Adams with clear blue sky.  She told me that clouds usually obscured all the mountains.  To see two of them was extremely rare, and she could not remember the last time that she could see all three.

From our side of the mountains in the high desert, Mount Adams was rarely obscured, but to see Mount Rainier was a rarity, and Mount Baker was too far north.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Peggy Wood, as Reverend Mother, singing Climb Every Mountain.  Having a nun in the movie Sound of Music singing the song does not make it a Christian worship song, but it is moving. The first time my wife and I visited Salzburg, Austria, we were not on a Sound of Music tour, but when I walked past the St. Peters Catacombs and turned around, I expected to see a Nazi soldier come around the corner of the church and into view looking for someone.  And then, a little trivia, less than ten years after the movie came out, I visited an Army friend from Vermont, and I did not know until we left the next morning that I had spent the night at the bottom of the von Trapps’ ski slope in Stowe, VT. And that was before I married the eldest daughter of a Texas singing family.

And here is the Gaither Vocal Band with others (Adam Crabb- solo, Wes Hampton, David Phelps) singing Sometimes It Takes a Mountain.

And here is Corey Voss singing The God who Moves the Mountains.

And here is Chris McClarney singing Speak to the Mountains.

These songs hit a chord with me. I have been greatly moved by each of them. I was wondering why it was so easy to put this quiz together, from the idea of mountains with names until completion. God was reminding me of the mountains in my past, with a promise that He will be there for the mountains in my future.
