Bible Book Names Quiz

Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years, as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush, so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared—to Egypt’s shame. Those who trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be dismayed and put to shame. In that day the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”

  • Isaiah 20:3-6

Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt to escape the Babylonians. They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

  • Jeremiah 41:16-18

In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.
On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin—the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the Lord was on him.

  • Ezekiel 1:1-3

Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled.

  • Ezekiel 23:19-21

In reading through the Scriptures, you can learn a great deal about God and about the human condition.  Isaiah said to not trust in man, but to trust in God.  Especially, do not trust in Egypt, but a few generations later, Judah went to the bosom of Egypt to hide from the Babylonians.  But this quiz makes no theological statements.  It speaks more of what is within the canon of Scripture, just for some fun.

This quiz is a little different.  Some of this is general knowledge.  Most of it can be answered with a basic knowledge while looking at the Table of Contents of the Bible.  But some of the questions ask about who wrote the books.

But a few rules need to be established.

  • A numbered set of two books are “two books” and the number in front does not negate the other word.  So, if Chronicles is the type of word that the question implies, then there are two of those books.
  • These questions are about the Old Testament and New Testament.  No other books in some Bibles apply here.
  • While Leviticus has the name of a person in the title of the book, it really means the laws of the priests, who were Levites.  I do not consider that book to strictly be a person’s name.
  • The book of Hebrews is not, for this quiz, one that was written by the Apostle Paul.

Due to the nature of the questions, there will be no Bible Reference Section this week.

The Questions:

7How many books of the Bible are in the New Testament?
8Are more than half of the books of the New Testament books that the Apostle Paul wrote?
9Since Paul wrote so many books of the New Testament, who came in second for number of books written?
10If you consider that Mark is Peter’s Gospel and Mark just took dictation, are there any of the Gospels that are the only book written by that author?

Scholars argue that the Apostle Paul did not write Hebrews.  There are two arguments for this and both seem to have merit.  Yet, in God’s inspiration, both could be argued for him writing the book.

The Book is not in Paul’s style

There are no personal greetings before and after.  The language being used is not the way Paul wrote.  Changing someone’s writing style is hard to do, and the style is just different.

It is interesting reading old commentaries.  Matthew Henry clearly states that Paul wrote it.  Then there are the transitional commentaries, while the modern commentaries clearly state someone else wrote it, with a variety of suggestions.

Paul’s Mission was to the Gentiles

This is clearly his message.  Paul states this in the book of Acts.

Maybe, Sort of, He could have written it?

Read through the book of Acts.  Each time the Apostle Paul preaches a sermon or gives his defense before judges, tribunals, etc., he carefully tailors his words to fit the audience.  Sure, a lot of that is the Holy Spirit at work, but so is the God-breathed Holy Scriptures.  So, if every sermon was tailored to the audience in the words being said, he might have used a different style in his writing.

I can get wordy in what I write now, but when writing engineering documents, I tried to use as few words as possible.  It was hard to do.  I like writing wordy sentences, and short sentences may lower the reading level of what is written, but then that can make the result too choppy.  It is hard, but it can be done.

As for Paul writing only to Gentiles as the Apostle to the Gentiles?  He was highly trained as a Pharisee.  If there was a synagogue in the town he entered, he started preaching there.  He knew the Scriptures.  His heart was for all people to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.  It might be unlikely, but Paul could have written Hebrews.  But oddly, the lack of personal greetings tends to have me point to someone else, but I still do not rule out Paul.

If you noticed, the answer to question 8 is different if Paul wrote Hebrews.  And I have seen some commentaries mention Matthew as the author of Hebrews, which would change the answer to the last question.  But this quiz was just provided as a change of pace.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Wintley Phipps singing It is Well with My Soul.  The hymn has one of the most moving echo choruses, and I love them.  Wintley Phipps makes some statements before that are very moving.  And I once asked God whether I could have a voice like Wintley Phipps when I get to heaven.  The answer was almost immediate.  “No, but the imperfections in your voice will be corrected, and you will hear your own voice as I do, in perfect glorification of your God.”  Or something like that.  But to be honest, this hymn is one of my all time favorites.  But even with that said, I want Blessed Assurance sung at my memorial service.

And here is Cliff Barrows leading the Gaither Homecoming Crowd in singing Blessed Assurance.  He leads the crowd in what has become known as “Crusade Style.”

And here is the Gaither Homecoming Crowd singing Just as I Am.  This includes the Cliff Barrows story about not singing Just as I Am in England.  How mighty is our Lord!

This video selection has been a kind of a stream of consciousness thing.  And I go back to Wintley Phipps singing I Surrender All.

“Take me Jesus.  Take me now.”  Do with me as you will.  I said words to that effect over fifty years ago.  Circumstances have pushed me one way or another.  Poor decisions have not helped.  But as Wintley Phipps says on the video that the last song is a part, that we glorify God in everything, regardless of what happens.

Have you surrendered all to Jesus?
