One Silly Word Quiz

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  • Matthew 5:48

They plot injustice and say, “We have devised a perfect plan!” Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

  • Psalm 64:6

“Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

  • Ezekiel 28:12

“Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their sins. Let them consider its perfection,

  • Ezekiel 43:10

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

  • Romans 12:2

I am thinking about a word that I almost always type wrong.  I stop myself and wonder what I am doing wrong.  I wonder what inside me compels me to add an extra letter here or take away a letter there?  It must be the rebel in me.

The first letter of each answer spells the mystery word.  If you guess the word before answering all the questions, the letter will help answer the questions, but I have tried to keep the questions simple this week.  Then again, some of the letters are not used as often as others, that is, for a first letter.

    The Questions:

     QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1Who was placed in a papyrus basket, sealed with pitch and tar, and sent floating down the Nile River?
2Who was the son born to Hagar when she was given to Abram to have a son for him?
3Who was Abram’s wife when she gave Hagar to her husband?
4What was Peter’s name when he first met Jesus?
5At some point on the island of Cyprus, Saul of Tarsus became known as what name?
6Who was taken into Heaven in a whirlwind, guarded by a fiery chariot?
7Who was the first wife of Jacob, who bore Jacob six sons, including Judah?
8Who was the seller of purple, originally from Thyatira, whose heart was opened by God and she insisted Paul and Silas stay with her during their initial mission to Philippi?
9When the answer to question 6 was taken up in a whirlwind, who witnessed this?
10Who was the man after God’s own heart?

These days, there is insistence of using a texting short cut that drives me nuts.  It should not filter into other media.  BTW, I think I will go CRAY if this keeps up!  (By the way, I think I will go crazy if this keeps up!)

And have you ever typed something wrong, and the red line appears under the word, and you accept the word as being correct without catching your error, and now it is in your personal lexicon as being correct?  Oops!

But when it comes to some words, the temptation is so horribly strong to make a mistake with those words.

I mean, not typing a word correctly?  Is that a sin?  And when you type it wrong as a joke, does that mean that it is no longer a sin or is it a sin that hurts no one, does not violate God’s Law, but is funny?

But what if no one catches the mistake?  Have you perpetuated the error throughout all twenty-four time zones?

Inquiring minds may not want to know!

Okay, most of these questions use fairly well-known people, but two in a row speak of women.  I could have used a companion of the answer to question five and writer of one of the gospels and the brother of Mary and Martha who Jesus rose from the dead, but I wanted to include a few female answers here.

In question three, one answer is technically correct as the question is written, but since this woman is known by two different names, both starting the same, you can say you have it right either way.

And the verse mentioned in question 5 is the transitional verse where Saul is not mentioned in the Bible again after this verse, only by the other name, except when this person gives his testimony of when he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, and later when his sight was restored.  Note that later in Acts 13, the one formerly referred to as Saul mentions Saul, son of Kish, in a sermon.

Okay, my often misspelled word is “misspelled.”  At first, I would think “Is not misspelled just a mash of miss and spelled, thus it should be missspelled?  But then, the imp in me decides to go crazy and spell the word a mispeled or misssspellled, or some other combination thereof.  After all, the word misspelled is just asking to be misspelled itself.  Right?  But, maybe that is just me.  I get so embarrrassssed when I am the only one that does silllly things like that.  (And if I am the only one, you would have no idea how hard the previous sentence was in typing it that way while autocorrecting was in effect.)  Hmmm. Autocorrecting was in effect when I misspelled misspelled, but it did not change it.  Do I smell conspiracy here?

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Hymns of Grace singing The Perfect Wisdom of our God.  This hymn was written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.  I could have used their video, but since I cannot spell misssspppeled properly today…  Actually I like what Hymns of Grace are doing.

To keep with a theme of perfect, since you probably do not wish for me to err in typing that one silly word again, he is the Shenandoah Christian Music Camp singing Peace, Perfect Peace.

And here is Laura Story singing Perfect Peace.

And here are the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers singing O Perfect Love.  The UST Singers are from Manila, Philippines.  They are singing this hymn in Kirche St. Georg, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.  The video comments simply said “Freiburg”, but there is more than one in Germany, and this is the one that my wife and I took my parents to see.

And here are Lynda Randall, with the Gaither Homecoming Crowd singing A Perfect Heart.

In the songs here, we have perfect wisdom, perfect love, and a perfect heart.  They were sung nearly perfectly, for we are imperfect people.  I heard a college band director and composer talk about an honors band that my son was playing in.  He said that you go to a football game and someone drops a perfectly thrown pass.  For a second, you might groan, but then the same guy catches a pass for a touchdown and you cheer.  The mistake is forgotten.  A batter at the baseball game swings and misses, but it only goes down as one strike.  But if any of these musicians plays a sour note, they all share in the mistake.  Of course, not a single sour note was heard, but the college professor spoke volumes in a few words, that these were the best of the best.  Yet, we all make mistakes.

With that in mind, we should be mindful of those words with the red line beneath them.  We are not always perfect.  But there is One who loves us with perfect love.  He has a perfect heart.  And we can be assured that His wisdom and plan for our lives is perfect.  We should give all praise and glory to God, for He is Holy.
