Do any of you remember the old television show, This is Your Life?  Some famous person invites a few famous people to attend the show, and suddenly, one of the friends becomes the person who the show is about.  They hear voices and hints, and they have to guess that the voice belonged to their third-grade teacher, as an example.  It becomes thirty minutes of giving a biography of the famous person while reuniting the famous person with people they might not have seen in decades.

Remember that show?  Well, this is not about that show at all.

This quiz will be about verses containing the words “life.”  So far, as of writing this quiz, I have had two people who I knew pass away.  I thought of writing a quiz about death, but I changed that to a quiz about life, something more positive, but for those in Christ, death means they go to be with Jesus, so not that negative in that regard.

And if you are wondering, the search engine came up with 565 mentions of “life” in the NIV, although that includes lifetime as seen in the verses above.  And that number tops verses mentioning “death” by one hundred, or there about.  I reserve the write to have a “life and death” quiz, since there are more than 50 verses that contain both life and death, although maybe not in the context of a life and death situation.

And with that many mentions of “life”, I checked how many books of the sixty-six books of the Bible that contain at least one mention of “life”.  The word “life” is mentioned in every book of the Bible except for nine books of the Old Testament and four books of the New Testament.  In the Old Testament, eight of the minor prophets do not mention the word.  The only other book is Song of Songs (Solomon).  The four books in the New Testament that do not mention “life” are 2 Thessalonians, Philemon, 2 John and 3 John.  Note: Of the 13 books that do not mention “life,” four are one-chapter books, Obadiah being one of the minor prophets on this list.

The questions are in biblical order.  The first seven questions are in the Old Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1The first two mentions of “life” in the NIV pertain to putting life into some body.  How was it done and to whom?
2In the Garden of Eden, there were two trees mentioned.  One was the Tree of Life.  What was the other tree called?
3What animal becomes cursed by having to crawl on its belly for the rest of its life?
4We talk about sanctuary cities these days, and the troubles those cities are starting to have.  But the cities of refuge established in Levitical Law, were for only one purpose, and only until the case could be adjudicated.  What was that purpose?
5Who was exalted so that the Israelites stood in awe of him as they had done with Moses?
6When the judge Abimelek states that his father had risked his life to save the people from the people of Midian, to whom was Abimelek referring?
7Who tells her daughter-in-law to call her Mara, instead of her given name because the Almighty has made her life bitter?
8What are the three things that come from this world according to the Apostle John in one of his letters, and not from the Father?
9Who will reign along with Jesus for the millennial reign?  And a bonus for what happens to everyone else?
10In the last chapter of Revelation, “life” is mentioned five times in the NIV.  Can you name one of the two things mentioned with “of life” added?

People who view, hopefully take, these quizzes and read other things that I write, might know that I get goofy, or maybe nerdy, when it comes to certain words, but the word “life” is important.  Only twenty percent of the books in the Bible do not mention the word.  Thus, 80%, roughly, do mention the word.

We only have one life, and we should not waste the chance that we have to make the right choices in life.  I believe the most important choice is to choose Jesus.  After all, it is the only choice that extends your life beyond the grave.

But while we are here, should we not have life in our lives?  Having life in your life to some might mean thrills, excitement, and merry living.  Those that think we should leave this world better than when we got here might have a point, but sometimes we spend our lifetime pursuing some goal to better the earth, just to find that our crusade made things worse.  I remember a recent study that went back over old records to find that DDT, Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, really did not kill half the birds that the original studies claimed that it did.  Since few insecticides since then have been anywhere near as effective, was it worth it to ban DDT?  Hmmm.  A few birds versus thousands of people suffering from malaria?  That question is above all our pay grades.  I am not advocating bringing DDT back, but “saving the earth” is above our pay grade.  Let us humble ourselves before we decide to save it.

And for those that read my posts, you will know that I am pro-life.  I might accept certain circumstances, but my wife had been a surgical technician most of her working life.  She knew that doctors were not immune to the depravity of life.  If the only reason allowed for abortion was the risk of the mother’s life, my wife knew doctors that would check that box so that they could do the surgery and have the insurance company pay them.  Not all doctors, but some, and people who want to kill the baby in their womb will shop around.  My wife’s attitude was cemented by one incident soon after we were married.  I wrote the remembrance in Five Tiny Perfectly-Formed Fingers.  It was illegal at the time, but the surgery was called something else.  The woman got what she wanted, and the doctor got paid.  But it scarred my wife, and I cannot think about abortion without hearing my wife say through the sobs, “Five Tiny Perfectly-Formed Fingers.”

Life is a gift from God.  Let’s not waste our life or take another person’s life.

What book of the Bible has more mentions of the word “life” in it?  Psalms with 65.  Why then does congregational singing in the church, and sometimes choir singing, have no life in it?

What is the book with the second most mentions of the word “life” in the NIV? Proverbs with 45.  Why then do people have such a cavalier attitude toward life, either by recklessness in their youth or by ignoring warning signs as they get older?

What book is third overall and with the most mentions of the word “life” in the New Testament?  John with 41.  Most pastors that I know comment that John has more “divinity” in it than do the synoptic gospels.  Whatever that means, there is a lot more teaching by Jesus, and if Jesus is telling us what gives us life, maybe we should pay attention.

There are two reasons why we should take care of the one life that we have so that we can live longer.  If we have not accepted Jesus, it gives us more time in which to do so.  And for those who have accepted Jesus, more life means that we have more time to share the Gospel with others.  Let us not waste that time.

But pride is a dangerous thing.  In making our mark in this world, in order to make our life “count”, we must not have pride of anything that was not our accomplishment, like life itself.  Pride of any kind other than pride in doing our best to glorify God, is something God does not like.
