Do Not Let the Sun Set on this Quiz

“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal.

  • Numbers 25:11

If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.”

When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.

  • 1 Samuel 11:6

  • 1 Kings 15:30

He served and worshiped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.

  • 1 Kings 22:53

It was because of the Lord’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end he thrust them from his presence.
Now Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

  • 2 Kings 24:20

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

  • Ephesians 4:26-27

The last quoted verse ties in the title.  Do not let the sun set on your anger, thus this is a quiz about verses containing the word “anger.”  No angry birds here.  Angered is part of the answer to one question.  There are well over two hundred mentions of “anger” in the Old Testament.  There are a whopping twelve references to anger in the New Testament,

The questions are in biblical order.  The last four questions are from the New Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1In the first use of “anger” in the NIV, a woman shows her husband a cloak and tells him that his slave had attempted to sleep with her.  Who then burned with anger and put his Hebrew slave into prison?
2When is the first time that the Lord’s anger burned?  This is when someone said he was slow in speech.  A bonus for the Lord’s solution.
3God talks about taking care of the widows and orphans (fatherless) throughout the Scriptures, but in one of the miscellaneous laws, under social responsibilities, God’s anger is promised to burn so that those guilty will be killed by the sword and their wives will become widows and their children will become fatherless.  What heinous crime is being discussed?
4Before Moses reaches the frontier of the Promised Land and after they received the Law at Mount Sinai, before he sends the twelve spies into the Land, the Lord’s anger burns twice.  The people complain about no meat and God sends quail and the very next story is about a rebellion against Moses within his own family.  What were the two punishments?
5When Joshua attacked Ai, he was repelled.  God let him know that there was sin in the camp.  And Achan, from the tribe of Judah was identified.  What was his sin?
6King Xerxes of Persia had thrown a lengthy celebration, followed by a seven-day long banquet.  While he and his companions were drunk what happened to make him burn with anger?
7While Jesus turned over the tables of the money changers in each of the Gospels, do any of the Gospels say He was angry?
8How can a chapter devoted to “love” have a verse about anger?
9Hebrews 3 talks about unbelievers never entering God’s rest, but it quotes God saying never resting as it related to what happened to the Israelites before they took the Promised Land?
10Why does the author of James say human anger does not produce?

I came up with this quiz more than a week ago.  I decided to make anger the theme of yesterday’s Babs and Harold Conversation.  But there are so many references to anger in the Old Testament.  And before you point out that God was angry a lot, those references do not all point to the Lord’s anger or God being angry.  Besides “wrath” is still fair game for a quiz someday.

No, people get angry.  It is a common emotion.  These days, we need to tone down our anger.  The sides are so divided that there is a gulf between the sides in arguments, yet with all that space, there is no room for common ground.  I might compromise on many topics.  I might let some things go, but when it comes to God, I cannot compromise.

And over my lifetime, I think I have been angry over people not accepting Jesus as their Savior.  But God loves them, and He lets them make their free choice to choose a place without God.  The Lake of Fire will not be pleasant, but you will not find God there.

I have spent a lot of time in prayer, wondering why the people I love reject God.  And some of them control the narrative so that as soon as you mention God, the fight starts.  To have peace, you cannot do what is the most natural thing for a believer to do, talk about Jesus.  That would make the most calm person in the world angry.

But salvation requires the work of the Holy Spirit.  So, maybe I did not pray enough.  Maybe I did not use the right words, although I know the Holy Spirit helps us in that department.  So, maybe my anger has been misplaced.  As the old fellow used to say, “I was barking up the wrong tree.”

In yesterday’s Babs and Harold story, I talked about some of my wife’s and my arguments.  Not the content.  I cannot remember the content of any of our arguments, until the sun went down, and I would quote Ephesians 4:26-27.  Husbands of the world, do not quote that Scripture when your wife is angry.  It escalates the argument, and she digs in her heals.

And then the argument becomes, “This argument is keeping me from my sleep.  We will continue to argue tomorrow, but you can sleep on the couch.  No one messes with my sleep!”  As I wrote yesterday, maybe only twice after that argument ending statement, and usually slamming the bedroom door, maybe twice did she ever come into the living room, to the couch, to cuddle – never to apologize.

After my wife accepted Jesus after twenty-five years, my wife and I argued, and she said she was sorry.  Note: She did not say she was wrong, just sorry for arguing.  I did something very stupid.  I held up four fingers and smiled.  She asked what that was for.  I said that is the fourth time since we were married that she ever said that she was sorry.  She punched me, but then she asked me whether that was correct.  I said it was to the best of my memory.  Then she said she was sorry for the countless times before, but the Holy Spirit had not been her guide then.

We can talk a good story about getting along with others, but to really accomplish that feat, it takes the Love of God in the relationship.  Other forms of “love” are never long-lasting.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Joshua Miller singing Slow to Anger.

Here is Unspoken singing God Help Me.

Here is Austin French singing Why God?

Here is Phil Wickham singing Battle Belongs.

Anger is a natural emotion, but we must wallow in it.  We must never wrap ourselves in a grand robe of anger and live in anger.  Ephesians 4:26-27 does not say that anger is a sin, but we should not let it become a sin.  We must never identify with that anger and live in it.  Let our anger take us to our knees, and let God fight our battles.  For the battle belong to God.
