  • Joshua 15:13

  • Judges 15:1

  • Esther 7:5-6

I just dreamed up this idea and I hope it works.  I will present three people that have something in common.  They might all be prophets or three kings.  They might all be young or they might be known for a long life.  The names may start with the same letter.  They will be listed in alphabetical order.  It is your job to rearrange the names, if necessary, to place them in biblical order.

For example, let’s take three men whose names start with the letter “A.”  In alphabetical order they are: Abraham, Adam, Ananias.  The question for the example would simply read: Abraham, Adam, Ananias.

Abraham left his father and travelled to the land that God promised him.  Adam is the first man.  There were three men named Ananias, all three in the book of Acts: the man who conspired with his wife to hide part of the money and lie to the Apostle Peter saying that was everything (Acts 5), the man who went to Saul to heal him of his blindness (Acts 9), and the high priest who, at Paul’s trial before the Sanhedrin, ordered Paul to be struck and Paul called him a white-washed wall before being told that Ananias was the high priest (Acts 23).  Three decidedly different people.  The answer would be Adam, Abraham, Ananias.  I will try to avoid names that are mentioned in multiple stories, unless the three stories are the significant factor.

And there may be some lists of three that the alphabetical order and the biblical order are the same.  I do not consider that a trick question.

Coming up with something that is different, as in ways to think about these Bible stories, I am working harder on the quizzes.  Even if you do not use the quizzes in your Sunday school class, they may give you ideas on how to give quizzes that might be interesting.  I like this one, but the biblical searches to get that key verse for the Bible Reference section was laborious, but a labor of love.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1Bad Kings of Judah: Manasseh, Rehoboam, Zedekiah
2“E” – Men with names staring with “E”: Ephraim, Esau, Eutychus
3Good Kings of Judah: Hezekiah, Jehoshaphat, Josiah
4“J” – Men with names staring with “J”: Jairus, Jethro, Jonathan
5Kings of the Exiles: Cyrus, Nebuchadnezzar, Xerxes
6Notable Old People: Methuselah, Moses, Noah
7Priests: Aaron, Caiaphas, Eli
8Prophets: Elijah, Elisha, and Isaiah
9Women mentioned in Matthew’s Genealogy of Joseph, father of Jesus: Rahab, Ruth, Tamar
10Young people who served the people of God: David, Joash, Samuel

Of the three who are thought of as being old, one only lived 120 years.  Of the three young servants of the Lord, probably David was the oldest when he was anointed.  But these are supposed to be listed chronologically.

I wanted to list more women, but Jael, who killed Sisera, was in the same story with Deborah, the judge and prophetess.  Would you remember Bernice, the consort of King Agrippa?

Some names may jump out at you, but others may be obscure, like the father who begged Jesus to heal his dying daughter, the father-in-law of Moses, and the boy who fell from the window and died while Paul preached a long sermon.  All three of these are mentioned in the questions.  (HINT)

Some of these may be easy to sort chronologically, but there is one case where the “torch” was passed from one to the next and another case of two consecutive generations.

Note: Manasseh is listed as a bad king in that the text says he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but he repented late in his reign.  But while he was being bad, he was possibly the most evil of any kings of Judah.  I did not have a question about kings of the Northern tribes.  Jeroboam, first of two, was the first.  Ahab was in the middle, but who else is recognizable?

I did not have a question on Judges.

And there are so many “J” names from the New Testament with multiples.  More than one Judas as disciples, not to mention the Judas that was a half-brother of Jesus and wrote the penultimate book of the Bible.  There were two notable Johns and two notable James.  But then, other than John the Baptist probably being older, they are all on the scene about the same time.

I so wanted a question on Tamar, Tamar, and Tamar.

Okay, there were three by that name.  One tricked her father-in-law into sleeping with her so that she could give her father-in-law a grandson.  One was raped by her half-brother, which led to her brother killing the aforementioned half-brother.  One was the daughter of Absalom.  But without saying that Tamar was Absalom’s sister and raped by Amnon, the clue might not be that easy to decipher.

There might be some argument in the question of the three kings who ruled over the exiles, but the Scriptures identify Xerxes (Ahasuerus) based on the size of the empire which has historical backing.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Sounds like Reign singing Psalm 23.  I thought I would use psalms set to music.

Here is Shane and Shane singing Psalm 139: Far Too Wonderful.

Here is Sovereign Grace Music singing Psalm 121 (He Will Keep You)

Here is Randall Goodgame, of the television show The Slugs and Bugs Show, singing Psalms 32:1-8.  In an interview with Mark Lowry. He told him that he tries to write all his music as written, although he might repeat a line here or there.  And yes, the television show is written for little kids, I wish more stations had the show.  Imagine, being thoroughly entertained and memorizing the Bible at the same time.

I may have to think of variations for this quiz.  I enjoyed putting it together.
