Joktan was the father of
Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.
- Genesis 10:26-29
Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites; it was named after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.)
- Deuteronomy 3:14
When Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron and Akshaph, and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Kinnereth, in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor on the west; to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites in the hill country; and to the Hivites below Hermon in the region of Mizpah. They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore.
- Joshua 11:1-4
When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back.
- 1 Kings 13:4
David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief officials at the king’s side.
- 1 Chronicles 18:14-17
There are a lot of people in the Bible whose names start with “J”, at least in the English translation as a hard “J” sound was not used in the biblical language. I find it utter silliness for someone to argue that they cannot believe in Jesus because there never was a person in biblical times named “Jesus.” They completely ignore differences in language. But that being said, these people with names starting with “J” have a variety of lengths in their names. Notice the Scriptures above. You have people’s names with four letters up to eleven letters in length.
This could be taken as a basic quiz about people whose names begin with “J” and you can leave it at that, but there is an added hint, a number in parenthesis, that gives the number of letters in the most common spelling of the name.
As a hint, you can find an answer among the verses above, but not the same person.
I wanted names from three letters to 12 letters, thus ten questions, but the only twelve letter name that I could find that was marginally known, was a less known spelling of that name. As such, I have two six-letter names.

What is in a name? Regardless of the number of letters, the names people had in the Bible were either prophetic or the language changed. Quite often, the name of someone matched their best quality in life.
It is odd that the last three of these answers in this quiz start with the same four letters, having something to do with “the Lord.” Ummm. This is a hint.
But we still do this today. A traitor that collaborates with an enemy occupying force is called a Quisling. The word gets its name from Vidkun Quisling, the Norwegian leader who sided with the Nazi government of Germany.
In our family, the phrase “pulling a <the name of our younger son>” meant that you washed enough dishes to claim you had washed “dishes.” Otherwise, you would have to admit that you only washed one dish. It is odd how he is a clean freak in the kitchen these days. Everything must be washed thoroughly and sanitized.
My middle name is my mother’s maiden name. Her father had no male offspring. My mother and her sister were both pregnant at the same time and they made a pact that the child’s middle name would be their maiden name. That particular cousin recently passed away and I sent a note to his wife, mentioning the middle name. She wrote back that she knew the name, but he never talked about it. She never knew he had a cousin with that name either. Yet, for one added generation, someone in the family carried that name.
Traditions seem to be fading regarding birthrights and blessings within families like you see in the book of Genesis, but people still tend to want the family name to not disappear.
But the key is what do we do with the name we are given? If we do not show love to our fellow man, is our name worth very much?

The most important Bible name that begins with “J” is Jesus.
“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”
- Philippians 2:9-11
Give your life to Jesus Christ. It is much better to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior in victory rather than defeat.
