If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
- Mark 3:24-25
While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment.
- Acts 18:12
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
- 1 Corinthians 1:10
I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
- John 17:23
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
- Ephesians 4:3-6
This quiz focuses on three words: unity and unite(d). In working on the Ephesians 4 Bible Study, it came to mind.
The title is a play on “United We Stand…” and I am uncomfortable with making “quiz” a verb, but I suppose it works.
The questions are in biblical order with a multiple answer for the last question.

The Apostle Paul speaks of unity among believers in four of his letters, 1 Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians.
Paul wrote these letters because the churches, in all four of these cases, were having problems in this area. In some cases, the rift within the church was from the heresies and false teachers that Jesus warned them about.
In seeing the degradation of the present church, it is not an old stodgy person who refuses change that warns the church, maybe in most cases, but it is someone that sees the parallels between what happened in the first century and what is happening now. We need to take Paul’s warning in Romans to heart. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
And why try to remain “united” when we stray from what the Bible says and we have division and divisiveness within the church? Sure, we might be equal members, but we are not united in Spirit.

I have a rhetorical question, not part of the quiz, but it relates to the quiz.
My wife passed away more than a year and a half ago. She often told me that if her diseases took her life before I passed away, she wanted me to find someone new.
I think of the joke told by Jimmy Stewart for a television show about the best jokes you ever heard. A woman is deathly ill, and she asks her husband, “If I die and you marry again, will she live in our house?” Her husband says, “Yes.” Then the wife, a little concerned, asks, “If I die and you marry again, will she sleep in our bed?” Her husband says, “Well, umm, yes.” Now even more concerned, his wife asks, “Certainly, she will not play with my golf clubs, will she?” The husband shakes his head and says, “No. She’s left-handed.”
I did not and I do not have a left-handed golfer lined up to take my wife’s place. It was until death do we part, and I am still in that mode of “I have not died…”
When you make that commitment to make that union and you only missed out on your 50th due to illness, when is a good time to even think of looking at another woman in that fashion?
But, if that thought ever comes across my mind, who will teach me how to go on a date? Even if the rules have not changed, I really never learned. My wife was attracted to my total clumsiness in that regard. I was clueless, and somehow confident in my cluelessness. But behind the veneer, I was constantly afraid that I would do something that messed up what we had. She admitted she was a flight risk due to her own insecurities, and that made me insecure also.
So, I do not think the world has enough antiacids to handle the GERD issues that I will have, if I ever get the idea to try. But from my writings, you have probably figured out that I have not let go yet. I think that is the real reason that this quiz topic came into my mind.
She inadvertently gave me the idea of Babs for the Babs and Harold conversations, and yesterday’s story marks Babs leaving, and I already miss her. She might pop in on occasion, but if I said when, that would be a spoiler. But then, the Friday afternoon posts are down to the last two Bible study lessons, with only one thing that she wrote to follow. That one thing might last another six months, a series of disconnected Bible verses and prayers that she wrote down. Some may be inappropriate, so maybe short of six months.

When I think of this topic, I am reminded of something that I told a preacher a long time ago. He asked if the PUP (Purity, Unity, and Peace) Commission could ever reach their goal. I said as long as there were those members who did not believe as the Bible states, we could either have unity or purity, but never both. The pastor cried.
In a recent episode of my favorite television show where four pastors answer audience questions from the Bible (called in or written and sent in), and the subject of predestination came up. One pastor was a Calvinist and he quoted Scripture. Another pastor quoted John 3:16, and took liberties with the “translation” and began to cry, thinking that someone on the panel could possibly think that predestination exists. The other pastors tried to excuse away the verses that discuss predestination, and being a lifelong Presbyterian, I might lose my membership by saying that I at least sympathize with them. But after the ten-minute segment, one was heated under his collar, two were bewildered, and the fourth was still crying. But after the commercial break, it was as if they had a group hug. They were all friends that were united in Spirit whether their theologies agreed or not was a totally different thing.
I pray for that type of unity. We can argue. We can disagree, but if Christ is King within us, we can be unified in Spirit.

How about the little guy in the blue shirt with the eyes wide in amazement?

He let those eyes get him in trouble last year. He is now 10, and he had survived the third grade by giving his teacher the “eye treatment.” He was behind, but they allowed him to advance. He professed faith in Jesus over the summer, and he has been a model student since then, exceeding expectations. I think part of it is that he and my late wife were buddies, and he had lost that guide in his life.
