I was thinking of a first-middle-last quiz using fairly short Bible verses, but when I did a search for short Bible verses, the AI gave me several verses with the preposition “for” near the middle of the verse.  AI has invaded internet searches.  It’s a new part of the search engine – you get the usual responses below a composite response that the AI generates – I like some things and others stink.

So, I thought of a matching quiz.  In the question section, you have the first part of the verse up to the point where the word “for” is found.  In the answer section, you have the “for” preposition, followed by the rest of the verse.

This could get very risky in that if you do not get the right answers, or you are having a bad day and you want some “perverted Scripture” to cheer your day, you could get the answers wrong and have a mess on your hands.

My question to you is which person will emerge when you see the verses?  Will you be the dutiful Bible learner who tries to get the right answers?  Or will you be tempted (and God does not tempt) to throw the worst combinations of verse parts together, just for a laugh?  The choice is yours.

Really, some of these might be logically determined.  Then placing the second half with the leftover first halves can be done by reading the first half with each of the second halves to see which sounds right.

The questions all come from Genesis.  The Bible Reference will be the first portion of the verse.

The Questions:

1Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
2The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
3The Lord God made garments of skin for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
4So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.
5“Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.
6She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
7I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
8Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb  for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.
9Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
10Please accept the present that was brought to you, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,

I could have gotten very diabolical with this quiz, carefully pairing verses that might fit together, but not exactly.  I could have gone comical and gotten verses that definitely did not go together, maybe even to being an embarrassing combination.  That may have happened anyway.

The first parts are in biblical order.  The second parts are in alphabetical order.  As a result, there is more than one question and answer that is lined up together already, but are you confident enough in finding which ones?

I was really playing with the technique a bit.  This quiz shows how this technique could be used with memory verses so that the person that is learning reinforces their memory by piecing the correct verse halves together.

The preposition “for” is often used to explain why.

While most children drive their parents crazy with the constant question “why?”, my wife and I had two “no-it-all” children who rarely asked the question.

The problem is that they simply thought they knew the answers, when they did not, like when asked where babies come from, our older son replied, “You go to the hospital to get the baby, and you got the wrong one!”  To this day, we have no idea what his baby brother did to make him say that.

But God tells us to obey, yet there is plenty of examples or reasons given.  Even some of God’s rules are imprinted in our hearts.  For instance, we simply know in our hearts that taking a human life is wrong.

And the verse that seems to be the most quoted “For” verse in the Bible is John 3:16.  We should always remember that God loves us and He sent His Son to earth to die for us.

But a lot of the Christian blogs out there occasionally, or often, ask the question “why?”  Some of those answers we can find in Scripture, but sometimes, we may not get the second half of that part of our life, the “for instruction, for testing, for growth, for humbling us, etc.” until we get to Heaven, and I think most of the time, we will be so happy to be in the presence of Jesus that the question simply does not come to mind.

In the answer column below, the Q#-A# corresponds with the number in the question column that matches the number in the answer column.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is the Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee, WI, USA singing For the Beauty of the Earth.  A different tune was in my hymnbooks.  I thought I would use hymns that start with “For”.

Here is the First United Methodist Church of Houston, Texas, USA singing For the Bread which You have Broken.

Here is First-Plymouth Church, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA singing For All the Saints.

Here is London Symphony Orchestra singing For Unto Us a Child is Born.

And now for two verses that both start with “For God…”

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
