Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,
- Exodus 31:1-2

- 2 Samuel 8:15-16
When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.
David said, “Mephibosheth!”
“At your service,” he replied.

I liked the challenge that I had in the “No B Quiz.” I even reused all but one of the No B Bible verses to kick it off.
I thought of having a quiz about names in the Bible that do not have a “H” at the end of the name. With Hebrew names, there are a lot of names ending in “H”. Just think of the Old Testament books: Ruth, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Jonah, Zephaniah. That’s just listing a few.
Here is the premise, just like with the No B Quiz. There are ten questions. The answer to each question is a name of someone in the Bible with no “H” in the English spelling of the name at the end. For example, Ahab, king of the northern tribes of Israel and husband of Jezebel. But, each of these “Not ending in H” people had someone in their sphere or influence. For instance, Obadiah (not the prophet) was a palace administrator for King Ahab who was hiding one hundred prophets and worshippers of the true God in caves, so that evil King Ahab could not get his hands on them.
The question is strictly about the “No H”, then a hint is given regarding the “H.” If the “H” is hinted in the question, it is a bonus hint. And I think I have given the bonus hint in each question.
To illustrate the example in a question form, let’s look at Boaz and Ruth, the question might be “Who is the man who married Naomi’s daughter-in-law to act as kinsman-redeemer of Naomi’s late husband’s property? (H-wife)
To decipher the “H” person hint, the “H” name is the wife of the answer. In this example, the question mentions marrying the daughter-in-law, thus it gives a bonus hint to Ruth.
I only have one question from the New Testament. The Old Testament uses Hebrew names, while in New Testament times, many names were influenced by Greek and Roman influences.
I know, this sounds weird but run with it. The questions are in biblical order.
The Questions:
| Question | Bible References | Answers | |
| 1 | Who was cursed when his grandfather became drunk, and his father told his uncles about the grandfather being naked? (H, grandfather) | ||
| 2 | After Sarah died, who married a second wife? The offspring of the second wife led to the Midianites and the people of Sheba (H, the second wife) | ||
| 3 | Jacob was provided six sons from one of his wives. Who was the first? (H, mother) | ||
| 4 | Who was the son, born of a barren woman who was married to Elkanah, and the boy was dedicated to God when his mother vowed to do so if she could only overcome her barrenness? (H, mother) | ||
| 5 | Who was seen bathing on her roof by David, and although she was married to a Hittite warrior, David made love to her? (H, her husband at the time) | ||
| 6 | What prophet to the northern tribes, who would gain a double portion of the spirit of his predecessor, was called by that predecessor while plowing his field? (H – his predecessor) | ||
| 7 | Who was the king who appointed a Levite, who would write several of the psalms, as the chief of musicians in worship ceremonies? (H- the Levite psalmist and musician) | ||
| 8 | Who was the teaching priest who led a second expedition to Jerusalem, with a letter from Artaxerxes to finish the work on the temple? (H – the governor, formerly the king’s cupbearer, who came later to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem) | ||
| 9 | Among the first exiles from Judah, four are named as being selected to serve in the king’s palace. These four would refuse the king’s food. And later, three would be thrown into the fiery furnace and the fourth thrown into the lion’s den – for separate offenses. They were each given a Babylonian name, but only one of them had both names not ending in H, the one thrown into the lion’s den. And only one had both names ending in H, the first mentioned to be thrown into the fiery furnace. Who are these two? (H-one of the men thrown into the fiery furnace) | ||
| 10 | Who was the prophet who called for everyone to repent, who ate wild honey and locusts, and he was born of a woman in her old age who had been barren? (H- his mother) |
When I first looked into this idea, it struck me that the English spelling of many of the Hebrew names in the Old Testament ended in H. But to make the quiz similar to the No B Quiz, I needed someone who had their name end in H to be someone close to that No H person.
I spent some time in prayer, wondering if it was even possible. As I pondered the situation, I got all kinds of unworkable ideas. Hezekiah relied on the prophet Isaiah. Zedekiah hated anything that the prophet Jeremiah had to say. From Abraham to Isaac to Jacob, none ending in H. Terah, the father of Abram might be too obscure, not that a couple of these aren’t hard questions. But I did not lose hope.
As I came up with my ten pairs of answers, the thoughts kept coming. There was the son of Adam and Eve, Seth. There was Rachel who gave birth to Joseph. There was Joseph who was thrown into prison by Potiphar. There was Hosea’s daughter, Lo-Ruhamah. And even in the questions above there is more than one “H person” and/or more than one “not ending in H” person.
I guess the point here is that if God puts a burden on your heart, He will give you the guidance to pull it off.

There are two questions where the book of the Bible is not given in the Bible References.
In the first case, the “H” name is mentioned once in the “No H” book, but since this was a previous generation, it would have to be a different person of the same name. But in the second book, the one with a name ending in “H”, the name of the previous book is mentioned several times.
These two books talk of three expeditions of people returning to Jerusalem. The first was led by Zerubbabel. He was tasked with rebuilding the temple by King Cyrus. But things had gone horribly wrong, with neighboring peoples who interfered and what would surface later as the sin of the people.
The priest mentioned in question 8 led the next expedition to complete and dedicate the temple, but intermarrying of the Jews with the local people surfaced as a major sin problem. That was resolved, and the priest continued to teach the people what the Law of Moses said, when the third expedition arrived to rebuild the wall, led by the king’s cupbearer, and now the new governor. The priest and the governor worked closely from this point on.
In question 9, there were four men selected who were true to God during their exile. Of those four, the question asks for the only one of the four whose Hebrew and Babylonian names did not end in “H” and his friend whose Hebrew and Babylonian names both ended in “H”. The oddity is their other two friends. One’s Hebrew name ended in “H” and his Babylonian name did not. And the fourth friend was vice versa.

I think I am just going to have hymns and songs that start with “H”.
Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here are the Asidors singing He Touched Me. Since this song, written by the Gaithers, became very popular about the same time I accepted Jesus, the concept of Almighty God touching me personally has been a focal point in my life. And I have used several Gaither recordings of this song, so I thought I would mix it up.
Here is Jehovah Shalom Acapella singing Have a Little Talk with Jesus. I think this was the first song that I discovered from this group. It is nice to revisit them.
And staying with them, here is Jehovah Shalom Acapella singing Hallelujah.
Here is the Fountainview Academy singing Have Thine Own Way.
And here is George Bev Shea singing How Great Thou Art. He was in his forties in this recording, and he kept singing for over forty years after this recording. Why would anyone who has God’s anointing want to retire early?
I could have gone on and on. There are so many.
I never got any complaints about the No B Quiz, and this type of thing challenges me in writing the quizzes.
