A Warning Mystery Word Quiz

Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

  • Luke 11:50-51

Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.

  • 2 Corinthians 11:23-26

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

  • Acts 5:40-42

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

  • John 15:18-21

This quiz is a mystery word quiz, but once you see the theme of the Scriptures above and the questions, the mystery word that is spelled with the first letter of the answers should be fairly obvious.

The questions are split evenly, half from the Old Testament and half from the New Testament.  The order of the questions spells the mystery word, from the first letter of each question’s answer.

The Questions:

1Who was scheduled to be put on trial after the Passover, but an angel rescued him? Once he realized this was not a dream, he went to a house and knocked, and Rhoda answered the door.
2What prophet ran for his life after Jezebel swore that what happened to her Baal prophets would happen to him?
3After leaving Malta, Paul was placed in house arrest, staying in a rented home for two years, and welcoming who visited, teaching them about Jesus boldly.  In what city was this house?
4Who was the man of Cyrene who was forced to carry the cross of Jesus?
5Who is the prophet whose predecessor was the answer to question 2 and was taunted, being called “baldy”?
6Who was high priest when Jesus was taken before the Sanhedrin, where He was spat upon and slapped and taunted?
7What prophet fled Jehoiakim and was captured in Egypt, brought back to Jerusalem and killed by the sword?  Hint: Another person of the same name was killed due to his wife being pregnant with the king’s baby.
8Who was the Gentile who was accused of being with Paul in the temple, which caused Paul to be arrested in Jerusalem?  But this man did not defile the temple.
9Who was the husband of Hannah and Peninnah?  Hannah had no children and Peninnah tormented and provoked Hannah.
10Who did Saul try to pin against the wall with a spear when an evil spirit came upon him?

I subscribe to the Voice of the Martyrs magazine.  You can get it for free, but they ask for donations with each edition.  Jesus did not avoid this topic.  If they hated Him, they would hate us.

While the attitude toward Christians has taken an ugly turn in the USA, the freedom of religion has given US Christian citizens some freedom from abuse.

There are many other countries with open torment and even death to those who call Jesus Christ their Savior.

But in spite of how others react, Christians are commanded to love one another, love their neighbor, and love their enemy.

Question 8 may not be a household name.  He definitely did not get an olive wreath for his part in Paul being arrested.  These days, the local athletes in community sports get something similar to this man’s name just for participating.

Of course, with any mystery word quiz, getting some of the answers might reveal the mystery word and then you at least know the first letter of the other answers.

But thinking about this topic, the world is not our home.  For those that believe in Jesus, it is like Paul says in Philippians 1:21, to live is Christ but to die is gain.  We will have our troubles.  If things are going too smoothly, we might need to ask whether our witness for God is getting noticed, or it may just be the calm before the storm.

But for those who are in danger for their lives every day, they need our prayers.  They heard the call of Jesus, and they went in harm’s way or they were in harm’s way when they accepted Him.  We praise God for their courage, and we pray for their well being.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is the Vagle Brothers singing Trust and Obey.

Here is Selah singing The People of the Cross.  The video is devoted to the Persecuted Church.

Here is Lydia Walker singing I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.  This song was inspired by a new believer that faced death, but his answer was the title of the song, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.”  There are other videos that I cannot show here that are available on Youtube.  One features people in risk of persecution, or those having been persecuted, singing the song while the photos and clips show persecution, primarily in India.  I mention this if you care to see how blessed you and I are.

And for those in any form of persecution, we need to take life one day at a time.  Here is Lynda Randall singing One Day at a Time Sweet Jesus.

We need to keep our eyes on Jesus, whether persecuted – for the strength – or not, to lift the persecuted up in our prayers.
