Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Quiz

Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?

  • Malachi 2:10

Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

  • Zechariah 4:3

This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not relent. Because she took captive whole communities and sold them to Edom,

  • Amos 1:6

He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

  • Daniel 3:25

The alcoves for the guards were one rod long and one rod wide, and the projecting walls between the alcoves were five cubits thick. And the threshold of the gate next to the portico facing the temple was one rod deep.

  • Ezekiel 40:7

Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.

  • Nehemiah 5:18

This quiz is for the mathematicians out there.  There are ten questions.  Each answer is a number.  Then there will be hints given based on adding two of the answers, then subtracting another answer from the sum, then multiplying that result by the next answer, and then dividing that number by a fifth answer.  It sound complicated, but no individual answer will be greater than twelve.  And if you get the right answers, the final answer will not be, or contain, a fraction.  In other words, all integers.

Oddly, the questions are split evenly between the Old Testament and New Testament.  The questions are not in biblical or numeric order.  Their order is based on the mathematical expressions that follow the questions.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1When Ham, the father of Caanan saw his father naked, he told how many of his brothers?
2How many days and nights was Jonah in the belly of the fish?
3How many of the ten lepers returned to thank Jesus and praise God?
4When Leah gave birth to Issachar (her last son), how many sons had she bore for Jacob?
5How many days was Saul blinded where he did not eat or drink anything until Ananias came to him?
6How many apostles were there once Matthias was added to replace Judas Iscariot?
7How many sons did the priest Eli have, both dying on the same day?
8When faced with the feeding of five thousand men, not counting the women and children, the disciples found a boy who had two fish and how many loaves of bread?
9When the Son of Man appears on the clouds from heaven, His angels will blow trumpets and they will gather the elect from how many winds?
10According to Proverbs 6, there are how many things that God hates, but then Solomon says there are seven things that are detestable to Him?

Now, take the answer to question 1 (A1).  Add the answer to question 2 (A2).  Then subtract from that sum the answer to question 3 (A3).  Then take that answer and multiply it by the answer to question 4 (A4). Then take that number and divide it by the answer to question 5 (A5).  The result is 8.

In algebraic form with “*” meaning multiplication, (((A1+A2)-A3)*A4)/A5 = 8.

Now, in a different calculation, take the answer to question 6 (A6).  Add the answer to question 7 (A7).  Then subtract from that sum the answer to question 8 (A8).  Then take that answer and multiply it by the answer to question 9 (A9). Then take that number and divide it by the answer to question 10 (A10).  The result is 6.

In algebraic form with “*” meaning multiplication, (((A6+A7)-A8)*A9)/A10 = 6.

The sum of the odd numbered answers to questions is 12.

The sum of the even numbered answers to questions is 32.

The numbers two, three, and six are each answers to two questions.  The lowest number in the answers is one and the highest number in the answers is twelve.  Four of the answers are odd numbers.  Six of the answers are even numbers.  And remember that all the answers are whole numbers (integers).

I know some people cringe when they remember those old days in Algebra class when the teacher says that a train travelling from New York, heading west, is going at a speed of 70 miles per hour and a train from Chicago, heading east, is going at a speed of 60 miles per hour…  Then where will the crash take place?

Okay, what the teacher asked was not that morbid, but ask any of the boys in the class what he asked, and you get a different story.

Within the first few weekly quizzes, one of them was Even Numbers Matter in an Odd Way.  I think it was the only time I did not state in the title that it was a quiz.  But over time, it has been one of the more popular quizzes.  But when it came out, there was pushback by those who did not feel comfortable with the math.

But the math only gives clues as to the answers to the questions.  The questions could stand alone as its own quiz.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here are Mark White and Stephanie Barthel playing Canon in D.  They are using Chapman Sticks.  This is one of my favorite pieces of music composed by Johann Pachelbel, with various arrangements and a variety of lyrics to this tune.  And I really would like to know where they are in this video.

Here is Randy Travis singing Three Wooden Crosses.  I cannot listen to this song without shedding a few tears.  But it has a number in the title.

Here is Anne Wilson singing Sunday Sermons.  It starts with “Seven Years Old, Third Row Pew.”

Here are the Cedarmont Kids singing Twelve Disciples.

This was a rather eclectic group of videos.  Regardless of whether you have a favorite number or you can remember how many apostles or sons of Jacob there were, God’s love is infinite.  And Jesus died on the cross to wash away our sins.  Will you ask Jesus into your heart if you haven’t already?
