Fill in the Blank Faith Quiz

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

  • Matthew 6:30

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

  • Matthew 8:26

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

  • Matthew 14:31

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?

  • Matthew 16:8

This quiz is a fill in the blank quiz.  The Bible verses were chosen by asking the Google AI for a list of common memory verses that dealt with “faith.”  Oddly, I did not specify ten verses, but that is what I got.  The word “faith” may not be in each verse, but there is an overall understanding of faith in the verses or two-verse combinations.

I then chose the word to leave out.  Since afraid was mentioned in two of the verses and hope in three of the verses, I went with that concept in the remaining verses.

If you have memorized the verses in the past, this quiz is a “no-brainer,” but plugging in each word into the verse should narrow down the logical answers even if you are not one to memorize verses.

The verses are in the order that the AI provided them.  All Scripture from the NIV.

Word List
Afraid, Afraid, Anxious, Dismayed, Hope, Hope, Hope, Perish, Understanding, Yourselves

There are five negative words and two neutral words among the words in the word list.  “Hope,” a positive word is the answer for three of the questions.

The concept of “faith” has both positive and negative elements.  In other words, with the faith that God gives us, we find ourselves void of the negative things, and we are filled with the positive things.

God does not promise us a life with certainty.  God does not promise us a life with no pain and suffering.  But God promises Himself in abundance.  God is powerful.  God is omniscient. And God is sovereign.  We place our life in God’s hands trusting in Him and His Holiness.  God promises us in His Word, and God, by His nature, cannot break a promise.

But do we always have unwavering faith?  With each of us that are true believers, there is part of us that is bedrock.  That level of faith is unshakeable.  But what about that extra bit of faith?

Jesus laments about His disciples, or those in His hearing, had little faith.  Okay, the phrase is mentioned five times in the Bible, but the synoptic Gospels tell a lot of parallel stories, thus synoptic – similar stories, mostly in the same order and often with similar wording of what Jesus said.

The Luke 12:28 instance of “little faith” is a repeat of Matthew 6, in the Luke version of the teachings from the Sermon on the Mount.  And if it does not dovetail with the Matthew timeline, Jesus could have used many sermon points multiple times.

Note: There is enough differences between the Matthew, Mark, and Luke accounts to account for eyewitness reporting, how three people, from three different vantage points, saw the same thing, but there are variations.  And Luke says that his account is a report from eyewitnesses, plural.  This does not give us reason to distrust the Gospels.  Quite the opposite.  This is true eyewitness accounts.  The three Gospel writers did not put their heads together to give identical reports.  And the added richness of the Gospels is that they wrote their accounts slightly different.  Thus, people of different temperaments get different things from different Gospels.  Something that would not happen with one melded account.

But back to the concept of little faith.  It begs the question of: What about larger faith?

I heard a body builder say that faith was a muscle, and you needed to work out, exercise, build up that muscle.  Some of that working out is called “life” and some pack a lot of it in a few years.  But Bible reading, prayer, and stepping out in faith are key exercises that each believer should perform.  Let’s not worry about the number of repetitions.  The more we do those exercises, the closer we draw toward Jesus and the more we will want to exercise in those ways again.  Okay, the stepping out in faith may lead to falling flat on your face.  Stepping out in faith again is like getting back on the horse that you just fell off, but there are different ways of stepping out in faith.  And maybe the act of falling on your face was due to not praying enough (including listening for God’s answer) and reading enough in the Bible.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Southwest Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA singing a Fanny Crosby favorite All the Way my Savior Leads Me.  I think I will choose old hymns from an old hymnbook.

Here is David Wesley’s Virtual Choir #6 singing The Solid Rock (My Hope is Built on Nothing Less).  David Wesley is no longer doing these virtual choirs for a variety of reasons.  His hard work was a great blessing while it lasted.

Here are the Petersens singing How Firm a Foundation.

Here is Eclipse 6 singing Be Still, My Soul.  Yes, there are other recordings, but I like this one.

This was a rather eclectic group of videos: congregational hymn, a virtual choir, a bluegrass group, and a capella.

I have written about the last hymn.  When my parents and I sat in the pews and my mother pointed to this hymn in the hymnbook, it meant I had been squirming on the pew.  I knew at that point, my Dad would remove his belt and “tan my hide” when I got home, no forgiveness, all on my mother’s orders.  But then, my mother was not in the pew often as she was the church organist and choir director.  I finally became the only tenor in the choir, and I could squirm on the choir seat all I wanted, and she never saw me.  But that is not what this hymn is about.  We do not even need to be physically still.  We could be dancing as long as we have allowed God to guide us.  “Be still and know that I am God” means for us to stop what we are doing and direct our focus onto Him.  If you have to shift your weight so that your bottom does not hurt to be able to slow down long enough to know that you are in the presence of God, then squirm to your heart’s content.
