Thinking of Tomorrow Quiz

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

  • Mark 11:1-11

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

  • Matthew 21:6-11

Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

  • Luke 19:32-44

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
“Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
    see, your king is coming,
    seated on a donkey’s colt.”
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

  • John 12:12-19

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
    righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  • Zechariah 9:9

This quiz is a mystery expression quiz.  The mystery is not much of a mystery, I hope.  For those taking the quiz on the day that the quiz comes out, what is tomorrow?  But for those taking it afterward, not even the month and day would help much, because this day changes based on the Hebrew calendar from year to year, and the day changes in the ecumenical calendar of the Roman Catholic church, which Protestants usually follow, and the Eastern Orthodox church.

The quiz works like any of the mystery words or expressions quizzes.  The mystery expression is two words, using the first letter of the ten answers.

The questions all come from the New Testament, but some answers are regarding people who lived in Old Testament times.  Think genealogies.  The last question is a fill in the blank in that this letter has no one by that name or place name.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1When Simon said that Jesus was “Messiah, Son of the Living God,” Jesus said that Peter’s name would be called what?
2Which disciple, brother of the answer to question one, who spoke up and told Jesus there was a boy with five loaves and two fish, leading to the feeding of the 5,000?
3Who was from Thyatira and sold purple in Philippi, becoming a Christian and inviting Paul’s mission team to her house?
4Who wrote one of the Gospels and left Paul’s first mission journey? Note: The answer is the name of the Gospel, since he is known by two names.
5When Paul and Barnabas split up, arguing over the answer to question 5, who joined Paul on his next mission journey?
6Among the five women mentioned in the Matthew genealogy from Tamar to Mary, one is not mentioned by name.  Rather, she is mentioned as having been the wife of whom?
7In the two genealogies of Jesus, both show the line going back to David, but one branches of to a brother of Solomon, outside the kingly line.  Who was this son of David, given the same name as the prophet who aided Bathsheba in getting Solomon anointed king?
8In Matthew’s genealogy, the heading starts with Jesus the Messiah and ends with Abraham – then starting the genealogy with Abraham – but who is mentioned between Jesus and Abraham in the heading?
9Who is only mentioned five times in the New Testament, but along with Gaius was captured in the riot at Ephesus?  He went on to help Paul in his missionary work, even named in Colossians and Philemon, along with the answer to question 4 as being with Paul, helping him.
10Flee the evil desires of ____and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Jesus coming into Jerusalem on a colt, the foal of a donkey, is seen as a humble entry into the city, but anyone that knew Old Testament prophecy might be looking for the king to enter in just such a manner (Zechariah 9:9).

And I have mentioned it in Sunday school, when studying Ezekiel 37, that if God can turn a valley of dry bones into a living army, He can make the very stones cry out (Luke 19:40).  But then, In Habakkuk 2:11 it says that the stones of the wall will cry out.

What does the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem mean?  He had been there before and no one seemed to notice except for the religious leaders who wanted Him dead.

Yet, He comes riding into town on a donkey and the people go crazy.

Well, the Holy Spirit may have been at work, but is it possible that these people lived in anticipation of a coming king?

Jesus said He will return.  Jesus said we should be on the lookout.  Maybe the problem is not Jesus at all, but us.

The not so mysterious expression is PALM SUNDAY.

Odd how “palm” is only mentioned in John’s Gospel.  The other three gospels mention “cloaks”, but I have never heard anyone say that this day was CLOAK SUNDAY.  Okay, Matthew mentions branches of trees.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is the First Methodist Church Choir, Houston, Texas singing Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.

Here is Paul Baloche singing Hosanna.

Here is First Plymouth Church, Lincoln, Nebraska singing All Glory, Laud, and Honor.  Plenty of Palm Sunday grandeur.  Great orchestra.  I could not understand a word.  I read along in the hymnal.

Here is Kari Jobe singing Hosanna.

Hosanna means praise, and in some instances, a cry for divine help.  I heard a sermon once where the pastor interpreted the calls of Hosanna as a call for the arriving King to establish His kingdom.  I have little to support that interpretation, but if so, it could be the reason the religious leaders were getting upset.

HAPPY PALM SUNDAY!
