This quiz is a missing word quiz.  In fact, there are five words that are missing.  There are two verses for each word, but sometimes, the word is mentioned more than once in the verse.  And with one of the five words, a different word among the five is also mentioned.  Actually, in the two verses for that word, the other word is different.  In other words, two of these ten verses have two different words that are used to fill in the blanks, but for the other four verses with multiple blanks, the featured word is used in each case.

Some of these Bible verses should be familiar.  Once you identify the words, you can fill in the blanks in the other verses, if necessary.

There is only one instance where the word is mentioned in a different form.  In that verse, the verse mentions the word a multiple of times, but one mention adds the letter “s” at the end.

The questions are in biblical order.  All the verses come from the New Testament (NIV).  The verses for one particular word might be in consecutive questions.

The Questions:

1By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you ____ one another.”
2____ I leave with you; my ____ I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
3“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have ____. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
4But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s ____ and the gift that came by the ____ of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
5For in this ____ we were saved. But ____ that is seen is no ____ at all. Who ____ for what they already have?
6Therefore, since we have such a ____, we are very bold.
7But he said to me, “My ____ is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
8For it is by ____ you have been saved, through ____—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
9Now ____ is confidence in what we ____ for and assurance about what we do not see.
10Whoever does not ____ does not know God, because God is ____.

There are only five missing words.  Each word is featured in two verses, but there are eighteen blanks.  As mentioned in the introduction, some words are mentioned multiple times in a verse, and two words are mentioned in verses when they are not the featured word.

So, for you math wizards, the two four-letter words are mentioned as often among the blanks as the three five-letter words.  One word is only mentioned twice.  Two words are mentioned three times.  And then the other two words are mentioned four and six times.

It is that word mentioned six times that has the one instance of adding the “s”.

I was criticized on one occasion that these quizzes primarily speak of people.  Who did this?  Where did this person go next?  The argument was that the questions did not get down to the important things of being a Christian.

The problem is that when we teach the Bible stories that talk about who went where and even what they did when they were “there,” we lose sight of why they went there to do the thing they did.

After all, God did not inspire the authors of the Bible to write down all these stories just to record the stories.  We can learn from them.  We can learn the good examples as a model of how to react to one circumstance or another.  We can learn that whatever we do, what this one person did was not the thing to do.

And even when we are studying the Pauline letters, as an example, we should not simply understand why Paul was telling one church what to do and another church what not to do.  We should see how those instructions apply to us today.  Even when it seems obvious that the author is talking about a tradition that was unique to the first century church, are we missing something from that instruction that can still apply today?

These five words are important to every Christian, in the first century and in our lives today.

10Whoever does not ____ does not know God, because God is ____.1 John 4:8Love, love

To restate, the five missing words from the verses are: Faith, Grace, Hope, Love, and Peace.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is MercyMe singing Grace Got You.  The words they use to describe how “Grace got you” gives me enough for another quiz.  Yes, laugh, smile, and dance, even when you do not know how to.  Why?  Grace got you.

Here are the Asidors, at least the guys, singing You Love Me Completely.

Here is Danny Gokey singing Hope in Front of Me.

Here is Laura Story singing Perfect Peace.

Here are Keith and Krystin Getty singing By Faith.

By Grace we are saved through Faith and even that is a gift from God lest anyone should boast.  And what does Grace give us beyond salvation?  We get God’s love which indwells us.  We get a Peace that passes all understanding.  And we have Hope because we know God does not fall short on His promises.
