Two Missing Words Quiz

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

  • Romans 5:1-5

Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

  • Romans 6:16

As for the title, this quiz has ten Bible verses with two words missing from each verse.

But I could call this a chain link missing word quiz.  One of the words that is missing from question 1 will be one of the missing words from question 2.  And this continues to the tenth verse where the other missing word in question 10 is the other missing word in question 1.

It becomes a ten-link chain that forms a loop.

Above, there are only two passages of Scripture used with this quiz to illustrate the linkage concept.  In Romans 5, Paul starts the links with suffering producing perseverance.  In Romans 6, Paul says one thing leads to another thing on two occasions in this one verse.

Warning: I have two blanks in each verse for the missing words, but the missing word, at least one of them may be in the verse more than once.  So, do not reject the word that you think should go there just because you see the word in the verse already.

Confession: The multiple occurrences of words got me confused in reviewing the quiz.

Some of these verses should be fairly common verses.  If you get enough of them, you might have the ones in between solved as a result.

The questions are not in biblical order to maintain the links.  All the verses are from the NIV.  Some of these words might be different in a different translation.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1Love the Lord your God with all your ____ and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your ____.’
2He gives ____ to the weary and increases the power of the ____.
3One person’s ____ allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is ____, eats only vegetables.
4Now ____ is confidence in what we ____ for and assurance about what we do not see.
5And now these three remain: faith, ____ and love. But the greatest of these is ____.
6Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to ____ one ____.
7Bear with each other and ____ one ____ if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
8But I want you to know that the Son of Man has ____ on earth to ____ sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”
9Give him some of your ____ so the whole Israelite community will ____ him.
10I call with all my ____; answer me, Lord, and I will ____ your decrees.

This was an easy quiz to dream up, but then panic hit me to the left side of my sternum.  Sure, I can pick any two words at random from a verse, but I should pick significant words.  Sure, I can keep doing that for eight more verses.  But then, the last one must have a significant word in the first verse.

Did I just bite off more than I can chew?

But this is one of those – If God gave you the task, He’ll give you the ability to make it through. – kinds of things.

Two or three times through these ten verses, I again panicked.  Yikes!  There are two or three words that look like candidates for the next link, but which will get me to that “just right” tenth verse.

But trust in God and He will see you to the end.  And I was definitely praising God when I found a beautiful tenth verse.  Frankly, I had a lot of verses to choose from.  Funny how you might doubt your ability (with a lot of help from God available), and then God gives you an abundance of choices where you thought the choices might be limited.  God has a sense of humor when He does one of those “I told you that you could do it” moments.

In trying to come up with different ways to develop a quiz, I often have my mind travelling down a word puzzle path.  My boys used to get me the jumbo word puzzle book, about an inch thick, once each quarter.  It would take me about a quarter to finish all the puzzles.

And I admit that I am terrible at some of the word puzzles and games.  I stink at Cryptoquizzes (quotations that have a substitution code applied), but if you talk of Crypto Families (a ten item list related to a specific topic that have a substitution code applied) I can usually whiz right through.  Context makes code breaking easier.

There are a lot of acrostics in the Bible.  Lamentations has them.  Why else would each chapter be twenty-two verses long, except for Lamentations 3 which is sixty-six verses long?  There are twenty-two verses in the Hebrew alphabet.  Psalm 119 is an acrostic with every eight-verse set starting with a letter in the Hebrew alphabet in order.  Of course, once you translate that to another language it is lost.

But I fear the Crostics in the word puzzle books.  You have the clues, but you are never given hints like “two-word answer” or “hyphenated answer.”  But each letter of the answers compares to a block in the grid underneath, using a number beneath the letter’s blank.  Some numbers appear multiple times in the clues section.  You work between the clues and the grid below to solve the puzzle, but once you have enough clues completed, the first letters of each clue followed by the last letter in each clue give the author’s name and then the author’s book title, or essay, etc.  Eventually, the grid at the bottom will be a quotation from the literary work.  For one thing, the people who create these things are amazing.  It boggles my mind how everything must fit with no unused letters or missing letters, although they might have the author’s first initial and then last name.  But since I complete these puzzles in pen, you get in trouble with a wrong guess.

Okay, I hear a few groans.  Yeah, I am one of those pen people when I do crossword puzzles and such.

The links are from strength to weak to faith to hope to love to another to forgive to authority to obey to heart then back to strength where we began.  I might easily use all ten words in a post, building on the last word, but maybe not in this order.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here are the Newsboys singing Love one Another.

Here are the Housefires featuring Nick Day singing Authority (in the name of Jesus).

Here is Danny Gokey singing Stand by Faith.

Here is Anne Wilson singing Strong.

I am reusing a few of these, but if the message fits.
