Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
- Ephesians 5:15-16
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
- James 4:14
“For all we know we may never meet again
Before you go make this moment sweet again
We won’t say goodnight until the last minute
I’ll hold out my hand and my heart will be in it
For all we know this may only be a dream
We come and go like a ripple on a stream
So love me tonight; tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come for all we know
So love me tonight; tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come for all we know”
- Sam M. Lewis, For All We Know
When I chose this Nat King Cole hit song, I had forgotten about the Carpenters song. They both share a similar theme and I provide videos for each below.
Billy Graham would make an urgent plea to come forward at his crusades. You never know what might happen. God is calling you now and you may die before you get home tonight. Do not wait until tomorrow. “Tomorrow may never come, for all we know.”
Okay, I threw that last line in from the song, but it mirrors what Billy Graham would say. We do not know. Under more certain circumstances, we might suggest that the person get to know Jesus better. In the peak years of Billy Graham’s career as an evangelist, many people knew of Jesus.
These days, the percentage is less. We have turned so far from Jesus that sadly some church goers do not have a clue. What they are told is nothing like the Jesus of the Bible.
But when we accept Jesus, it is as if when we hold out our hand, our heart will be in it.
For those who accept Jesus, love grows within them. They love Jesus more each day while loving those around them too.
It becomes a lifetime of getting to know each other.
And the true Christian cannot hold back that love. They want the world to know what they have discovered.
They want everyone to share in that love.
And they cannot wait for tomorrow.
Tomorrow may never come, for all we know.
Here is Nat King Cole singing For All We Know.
Here are the Carpenter singing For All We Know. Karen Carpenter and Nat King Cole had similar deliveries. A fantastic voice in each case, and they let the song tell the story, no need to “interpret” .
The two songs both speak of love. They both speak of love growing. They both speak of love growing, but time will tell. But we do not know if time is on our side. We may not have this moment again, for all we know.
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
