Leader Quiz

“‘When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat without defect. He is to lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord. It is a sin offering. Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the leader’s sin, and he will be forgiven.

I thought of an offshoot to the End Times Quiz series.  If war is the focal point in most people’s minds regarding the End Times, why not look at the military by the division of duties.  We have had a commander quiz.  We will continue with the leader.

As the word implies, the leader leads the soldiers into combat.  He may not be in the front of the combat, but he gets his hands dirty, along with the other soldiers.  These days a woman can be in that role.  Other quizzes may be for soldier, warrior, officer and centurion.  Spy (spies) might be workable.

This quiz is made up of ten questions about verses mentioning a “leader.”  The answers, however, may be found by reading more verses before and/or after the referenced verse.

The verses are in biblical order.  There are seven verses from the Old Testament and three verses from the New Testament.

The Questions:

 QuestionBible ReferencesAnswers
1In the first use of “leader” in the NIV, we find Moses and Miriam singing their song.  The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the people of Canaan will melt away, and the leaders of what people will be seized with trembling?  So much so that in Numbers, they hire Balaam to curse the Israelites.
2On the way to Mount Sinai, the Israelite leaders reported to Moses that on the sixth day, everyone gathered twice as much as the rest of the week.  Twice as much what?
3Who suggested to Moses that he could not do everything for so many people, and leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens were appointed?
4In what book in the Bible do you find more than one quarter of the uses of “leader”, twelve uses in one chapter as the leader of each tribe was established and the people were counted?
5What city’s people tricked Joshua and the leaders of the tribes into signing a treaty to not destroy them?
6During the time of the Judges, the people of Gilead were being oppressed by the Ammonites.  They swore that whoever could lead an attack and drive out the Ammonites would be their leader.  Who led them to victory?  Hint: He won the battle but he swore an oath that came back to haunt him.
7Halfway through the book of Ezra, what teaching priest gathers the leaders of Judah together to send a group of people to Jerusalem.
8Who was the synagogue leader who came to Jesus because his daughter was dying?  And Jesus cured a woman of her issue of blood along the way.
9In 1 Corinthians, Paul speaks a great deal about the pride people have for their leaders, but Paul concludes “no more boasting over leaders.”  One church division was over one group who followed Paul while another group followed whom?
10When Paul went with Barnabas to Jerusalem to meet with the leaders there to present the Gospel that he teaches to the Gentiles, who also went with them and was not required to be circumcised, although a Greek?  Hint: Paul personally wrote a letter to him.

The saga of the people in question 5 is an interesting one, they do an expert job in making it look like they had travelled from a land far away.  They plead with Joshua to show them mercy.  They trick Joshua into signing a treaty and an oath was given.  Note that oaths meant something in those days and in God’s eyes, still today.

Then just days later, they realize that their city was one of a few cities next on their list to destroy.  They could not do so without incurring God’s wrath.  So, they would still protect them, but the people of the city would be their servants.

This worked out until King Saul was frustrated.  He had not had a victory of late and he felt the kingdom slipping away from him, so he attacked this city without provocation and destroyed it, but not all the people.

Then, late in the reign of David, there was a famine and in inquiring of God, they determined that the people of this city had not been avenged for Saul’s attack.  Seven descendants of Saul were given over to the people of this city.  Two of these men were sons through Saul’s concubine, Rizpah.  When these men were executed and bodies displayed on poles, Rizpah valiantly fought off wild animals and birds of prey to protect the bodies of her sons, which gained her honor before king David.

I thought about writing memories of being a platoon leader, but that can wait for another time.

Question 10 is about Paul’s fight with the Judaizers among the believers.  He talks about circumcision in many of his letters, and I think the majority of people get the wrong impression.  Paul was himself circumcised, but to tie circumcision to salvation adds works to what Jesus had already done on the cross.

Paul was not necessarily against circumcision.  He added a young man to his second mission team who was half Jewish and half Greek.  Since Paul anticipated going into synagogues where the uncircumcised could not go, Paul had the young man circumcised.  That was not the point at all.  The Judaizers were adding rules to the Gentiles to turn them into Jews, instead of being saved by Grace through faith, and not of works.

Today research shows that the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks.  Circumcision contributes to a reduction in urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and certain cancers. General hygiene is improved.  The risks are problems due to increased sexual sensation, and the immediate issue of pain, bleeding, and infection if not treated properly.
