The End Times Quiz series, at least the birth pains, is complete.  But I am continuing the people of war quizzes, every other week.  We have looked at Commander, Leader, and Soldier.  There should be enough references to officer, centurion and spy (spies) to keep these quizzes going.  There are twelve references to sailor, not all military, but that is a possibility.

We had soldier two weeks ago.  Why distinguish between soldier and warrior?  I like an AI (artificial intelligence) answer to that question.  A soldier is defined by duty, obedience, and training.  But a warrior is defined with a deeper meaning, a spiritual commitment to a righteous cause.  That could mean something when war was not involved.  But, you might say that a warrior is a soldier who distinguished himself in battle, but then again, the act of distinguishing oneself is probably that spiritual commitment.

This quiz is made up of ten questions about verses mentioning a “warrior.”

The verses are in biblical order.  All questions are from the Old Testament.  One heading in Revelation 19 is the only mention of “warrior” in the NIV New Testament, but the headings are not divinely inspired.

The Questions:

1Who is the first person to be identified as a warrior in the NIV?  He was a son of Cush, and he was also called a mighty hunter.  Both Babylon and Ninevah became centers of his kingdom.
2Who is called a warrior in the song of Moses and Miriam after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea?
3Who was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat, so the Midianites would not see him?  And he claimed to be from the smallest Clan in Manasseh and the weakest in his family, but the angel of the Lord called him, “mighty warrior.”
4Another warrior among the judges, whose father was Gilead and his mother was a prostitute?  He was a good judge, but he made an unwise vow.
5When the spirit of God left Saul, an evil spirit took His place.  One of Saul’s servants claimed that a young man from Bethlehem who was brave and a warrior could play the lyre to soothe Saul’s troubled spirit.  Who was this young man?
6A man found someone alive, hanging in a tree, but he did not harm him.  Instead, he told Joab what he saw.  Joab said that if he had killed the man he would have been rewarded coins and a warrior’s belt.  Who did this man see in a tree?
7After the rebellion of the answer to question 6 was over, Sheba son of Bikri, rebelled. Amasa was sent to quell the rebellion, but why did David send Abishai?
8How many mighty warriors are mentioned specifically by their number?  Bonus: Jointly, what did this number of mighty warriors do to get special mentioning in the praises of David’s warriors?
9Two other mighty warriors were also mentioned other than the answer to question 8, listing their exploits.  One was Abishai and what other mighty warrior was the mighty warrior who killed Adonijah and Joab to solidify Solomon’s control of the kingdom?
10Other than the “Number” of mighty warriors and the two honorable mentions (questions 8 and 9) how many are simply listed by name?

Question 10 speaks of a number of warriors that David felt needed to be mentioned as mighty warriors, although no specific feat of courage or strength is mentioned.

This list begins with Asahel, brother of Joab, thus, nephew of David.  Asahel was a great runner.  He chased Abner, commander of what was once Saul’s army.  Abner repeatedly told Asahel to not follow him, but Asahel was unrelenting.  Abner stopped and held his ground and Asahel became impaled on the blunt end of Abner’s spear.  Joab would soon kill Abner for having killed his brother.  All this bloodshed led to David being the undenied king of all Israel, but too much blood was shed when diplomacy might have worked.

The list ends with Uriah the Hittite.  Could there have been two of them?  I doubt it.  Uriah, who David had killed to cover up for his adultery with Bathsheba was worthy to be on the list of mighty warriors.

Not on the list is Joab.  Joab was the commander of David’s army by virtue of a decree David made, as to who would take Jerusalem and Joab led the first group of warriors into the city.  But shedding blood, some innocent, led to Joab’s eventual demise.  Joab killed Abner, who David had agreed to be his commander, so that the kingdom would be reunified.  David again assigned Amasa as the commander for the same reason.  Amasa had been the army leader under the rebellion of (answer to question 6).  Joab killed both Amasa and struck the first blows in killing the answer to question 6.  And some of this was against David’s commands.  As such, he is not mentioned.

In doing research for this quiz, I ran into a video from Tim Tebow.  He talked about the combination of questions 8 through 10.

He gave the Hebrew word for mighty men and for men.

Then he challenged the audience.  Are you satisfied being a man or do you want to be a mighty man?

Then he gave the ways how to be a mighty man in the family and at your job.  You can be a prayer warrior, a Bible study warrior, and you can take your family to church.

Mighty men are those who stand up for their faith, even when there is opposition.  Mighty men of faith are those who show love to their fellow man when everyone else preaches hatred and anger.

We can be a warrior in faith, but never forget from whence our strength is realized.  Jesus will win the battle.  We do not have to fight.  Jesus Christ, my Champion, is standing by my side.
