With the assassination of Charlie Kirk a month ago, actually the day prior to me writing this quiz, since I try to stay ahead on some things, I thought a quiz on the word “speak” is appropriate. Maybe I should have a quiz on listening. Everyone wants to speak these days, but they cannot stand by and listen to something that they disagree with. I am like anyone else. I do not like it when someone says things with which I disagree, but I have defended the constitution of the United States, and I believe everyone has the right to speak. They should not be killed due to someone not liking what they say. That is when not listening further may be important. When I am offended on television, I change the channel, mute the speaker, or turn the “idiot box” off. I do not oil the gun and adjust the sights.
This quiz is made up of ten questions about verses mentioning the word “speak, speaking, or speaks.”
The questions are in biblical order.

The first Scripture above speaks of us not being silent. It speaks of speaking.
Too often these days, justice is not served because one person remained silent. Justice also fails to be served when too many people give false testimonies.
This does not have to be in the courts of law. I went to a church’s congregational meeting, and someone told me before the meeting was to start that I should not worry about the vote. “The fix was in.” So much for believers getting together and having the Holy Spirit guide us to the proper decision.
Sometimes speaking out can be dangerous. When speaking the truth of the Gospel, some countries will arrest you for such things, even carrying a death sentence in some places.
But when justice needs to be served, we should speak up.

Speaking in public is something that does not come naturally to me. I was always a wallflower at parties, trying whatever it took to not even go to the parties. My brain would freeze any time I had to read out loud. I still sound like an elementary school student when reading the Bible, and I am the one teaching the class. I like class participation in the reading, so I do not have to do so all the time.
But when it came to performing a part in a play, I could do that. That was not me. That was the guy I was playing.
And then, a little over forty years ago, I had to present safety rules in an innovative way. I dressed up like Justin Wilson, who had a cooking show at the time on PBS (Public Broadcasting System). I was not me. I was Justin Wilson, even with the accent. I think my maternal grandfather might have been related to the Cajuns in Louisiana.
But God opened my eyes to how I could be a public speaker. If I got nervous or uncomfortable, I could use humor. The audience liked it, and my nerves calmed down.
Ever since that time, I have taught Sunday school classes, ran industrial training departments, and gave presentations at conventions. I think my largest crowd was about 400-500 people in attendance. They ran out of chairs and people lined the aisles, standing for my forty-minute presentation. Oddly, the only fear that I had was that the local fire department would come by and shut us down since we exceeded the allowable room occupancy.
And from the first, I have praised God for curing me of my fear of public speaking.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is (Bethany Music) Casey Paulin with James Stockstill (also on piano) and Brent Milligan (Cello) singing Speak.
Here is Lauren Daigle singing You Say.
Here is TobyMac singing Speak Life.
Here is Jeremy Camp singing When You Speak.
The songs have speaking in two directions. It is the most wonderful voice to hear when God speaks to us. But we need to speak to others about Jesus. We need to speak in our prayers and worship to God.
But we also need to listen.
