Another Old Song – Songs about Taking or Giving Blame

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

  • Matthew 5:43-45

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

  • Matthew 11:25-26

He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

  • Matthew 18:2-5

These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.

  • Revelation 14:4-5

Don’t blame me
For falling in love with you
I’m under your spell
But how can I help it?
Don’t blame me

Can’t you see
When you do the things you do
If I can’t conceal
The thrill that I’m feeling
Don’t blame me

I can’t help it
If that doggone moon above
Makes me want
Someone like you to love

Blame your kiss
As sweet as a kiss can be
And blame all your charms
That melt in my arms
But don’t blame me

(Interlude)

Blame your kiss
As sweet as a kiss can be
And blame all your charms
That melt in my arms
But don’t blame me

(Interlude)

Blame all your charms
That melt in my arms
But don’t blame me

  • Dorothy Fields (Jimmy McHugh, music), Don’t Blame Me

[Verse 1]
If I expected love when first we kissed
Blame it on my youth
If only just for you I did exist
Blame it on my youth
I believed in everything
Like a child at three
You meant more than everything
All the world to me

[Verse 2]
If you were on my mind all night and day
Blame it on my youth
If I forgot to eat and sleep and pray
Blame it on my youth
If I cried a little bit
When first I learned the truth
Don’t blame it on my heart
Blame it on my youth

[Instrumental Break]

[Outro]
If you were on my mind all night and day
Blame it on my youth
If I forgot to eat and sleep and pray
Blame it on my youth
If I cried a little bit
When first I learned the truth
Don’t blame it on my heart
Blame it on my youth

  • Edward Heyman (Oscar Levant, music), Blame It on my Youth

Is it not interesting that these two songs have the same idea, but one says to not blame the singer and the other one says to blame the youth of the singer?  Okay, blame me, but blame the fact that I do not know what I am doing.

This is not a “blame” themed post, but a “youth” themed post.  I think the Scriptures should have given that away.

Both of these songs talk of total devotion.  Both speak of kisses, so a few words would need to be changed to make them worship songs and maybe not even then.

But we are children of God if we truly believe and trust in Jesus.  Our devotion should be like that described in these songs.  We think of nothing else – okay, we have to go to work and such – and we forget to do the normal everyday things.  Absolutely we should pray, and if you are so in love with Jesus that you forget to bathe, do not come visit me.  That odor makes my eyes bleed.  You should do as Jesus teaches.  You should love others, which means take a bath or shower.

But the line in the second song, near the beginning is important, “If only just for you I did exist”.

Yes, that is the kind of devotion we should have toward Jesus.

With a little massaging, these two songs could each be sermons in themselves.

Here is Nat King Cole singing Don’t Blame Me.

Here is Nat King Cole singing Blame it on my Youth.

Is it a thrill we are feeling or is loving God the reason I exist?  But totally surrendering to His will is the best way to live this life.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
