When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!” Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
- Judges 9:36
Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?”
- 2 Kings 20:9
We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
- 1 Chronicles 29:15
When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
- Nehemiah 13:19
There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.
- Job 34:22
I have already written a quiz on “shadow” in the Bible, but I am using as many different verses as possible, thus, other questions.
To tie in the title, the beginning of the old long-running radio show, and the short lived television show, The Shadow, was an eerie voice, most memorable was Orson Welles, who asks and answers the question, “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.” With the first quiz, I remembered something I had said in Sunday school, which applies to me as much as anyone else, that we need to repent of those sins that we do in the shadows where we might not think anyone is watching. Bad thoughts might be high on that list, and you do not even need the shadows. I had no idea why I went in the direction during our Sunday school conversation, but if the class did not take it to heart, I did, and thus, the theme of this quiz as a follow-up.
This is a quiz about verses containing the word “shadow.”
The questions are in biblical order. And all but the last four of the questions are from the Old Testament.
The Questions:
| Question | Bible References | Answers | |
| 1 | According to Job, who longs for the evening shadows? | Job 7:2 | The slave. |
| 2 | According to Bildad, we were born yesterday, we know nothing, and what is but a shadow? | Job 8:9 | Our days on earth. |
| 3 | To what is Job referring when he says, ‘They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.’? | Job 14:2 | Mortals, from verse 1. |
| 4 | According to Job, his face is red with weeping and what is ringed in dark shadows? | Job 16:6 | His eyes. |
| 5 | When Jeremiah speaks of the shadow of Heshbon and a blaze that would burn the foreheads of noisy boasters, upon whom is God proclaiming a curse? | Jeremiah 48:45 | Moab |
| 6 | Who did the Jews in the time of Jeremiah think would sit on the throne in Jerusalem forever, but they were mistaken? | Lamentations 4:20 | The “anointed”, meaning the kingly line of David. Jesus is our spiritual king, and will physically reign someday, but the Jews thought the covenant with David would keep them safe from exile. |
| 7 | In Luke 1, there are two songs, the second song ends with delivering people from the darkness of the shadows and onto the path of peace. Who is this song speaking of as the prophet of the Most High? Bonus: Whose song is the second song in Luke 1? | Luke 1:79 | John the Baptist (Baptizer), son of Zechariah who sings this song. |
| 8 | Religious ceremonies, New Moon celebrations, and sabbath days are just a shadow of what things, what reality that is to come? | Colossians 2:16-17 | Christ |
| 9 | Our sanctuary where our priests worship is a mere shadow of the sanctuary somewhere else. Where? | Hebrews 8:5 | In Heaven |
| 10 | According to James, what do shifting shadows do that God does not do? | James 1:17 | change |
Shadows are used as a metaphor for a variety of things.
To get the quiz title out of the way, the shadow is where evil lurks.
But shadows are fleeting. A cloud comes along, and your shadow disappears, but then, that means you are in the shadow of the cloud. The shadow being here one moment and gone the next is a metaphor for our lives.
In biblical times, shadows and the length of shadows were means of telling time. Lengthy shadows meant that the sun would soon set.
But shadows also provide an image of something. The shadow is not the thing, but an image of it. Thus, a shadow gives us a glimpse of something that we might not have experienced yet.

This is the second quiz about shadows in the Bible and I have not used the verse that I think of that speaks of shadows to me.
Psalm 23:4 speaks of a valley of darkness in many modern translations, but I grew up with the KJV, and “the valley of the shadow of death.” Is possibly the first “shadow” that I think of.
I did not wish to disappoint anyone in this regard, but since I use the NIV for these quizzes, it disqualifies Psalm 23.
But never fear, if I get around to a quiz on valleys, I will be sure to mention it.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video. Here is the opening line for the radio / television show The Shadow. It features Orson Welles.
And here is Jamie Whisenhunt (Gateway Worship) singing In the Shadow.
And here is Jeremy Riddle singing Shadow.
And here is the Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet singing Valley of the Shadow.
And here is Lindsay Kirkland of Sounds like Reign singing Psalm 23: The Lord’s My Shepherd. I think the first quiz on shadows is the first time I used a video from Sounds like Reign, and now they have their children singing with them.
In confessing our sin, we bring the sins that we do in the shadows into the light. We lay them before God and repent. And our faithful Father in heaven forgives us of our sin.
