They Asked Jesus Quiz

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”
But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

  • Matthew 22:15-22

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

  • John 20:15-18

Again, I was praying about a theme for a quiz.  It’s not that I am getting dry, but maybe it is.  I think I spend a third of my writing time on these quizzes thinking of the topic.

But as I prayed, I had my eyes closed.  And sometimes, you see something, usually a negative image of what you had been looking at or your eyes playing tricks on you.  But I saw a blue four-sided figure, my mind did not focus on it, but the corners were not right angles, so, maybe a rhombus, parallelogram, or a trapezoid.  What my eyes focused on in the darkness with my eyes closed was the bright purple question mark in the middle of the blue.

I opened my eyes and asked, “What does that mean?”

And it was as if Jesus answered with, “Add that question to all the others that people asked?”  Because it dawned on me that the quiz theme had to be questions that people asked Jesus.

And I seem to be at war with AI lately.  I carefully phrased a question of “what questions did people ask Jesus?”  And half the results were questions that Jesus asked.  Yes, I could have done a quick speed read since a lot of the stories in the gospels start with Jesus being asked a question.

I will quote the question.  But the proper answer will be Who asked the question and How did Jesus answer it, or dodge the question?

The questions are in biblical order which may not be in chronological order.  The Bible Reference only has the question(s).  In some cases, there was more in that verse.

The Questions:

QuestionBible ReferencesWho asked and How Jesus answered
1“Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
2“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
3“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
4“Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
6“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
7“Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
8“You are a Jew and I am … (a partial answer). … How can you ask me for a drink?”
9“Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
10“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

The first Scripture at the top is an example of Jesus being asked a question.

Jesus did not answer the question.  In this manner, he avoided the trap set for Him to fall into.

Answering a question with a question is irritating at times, but when you are being the victim of someone setting a trap, you can learn a lot from Jesus.

We need to know how to read the crowd.  Is the person genuinely curious?  Are those around the questioning person licking their lips about to pounce if you answer against their viewpoint?

Praying for wisdom before you get into the situation is always a good start.

I wanted to use the second story quoted at the top.  Mary Magdalene never asks a question.  She could have easily phrased it a little differently.

She was speaking to Jesus, thinking Him to be the gardener.

If she had said, “Did you move the body?”

If so, I would have used that wonderful story.

Mary had seen Jesus die.  She was not expecting Him to be there in the flesh.

She did not recognize Him due to Him being alive was unthinkable.

But once He called out her name, all that changed.

Through all our fears and doubts as we go from one struggle to another. How glorious will it be when we hear Jesus call us by name?
