These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the Lord after the ark came to rest there. They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.
- 1 Chronicles 6:31-32
David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service:
From the sons of Asaph:
Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.
- 1 Chronicles 25:1-2
The priests, the Levites, the musicians, the gatekeepers and the temple servants settled in their own towns, along with some of the other people, and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
- Ezra 2:70
“The rest of the people—priests, Levites, gatekeepers, musicians, temple servants and all who separated themselves from the neighboring peoples for the sake of the Law of God, together with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand—all these now join their fellow Israelites the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the Lord our Lord.
- Nehemiah 10:28-29
The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No worker of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again.
- Revelation 18:22
The New Boilerplate
My wife filled a small book with “Angel” on the cover. It was hidden with a box of crafting things. On 18 July 2025, I thought I had posted the last of these. But this little angel book held a prayer, followed by 71 quotes. So, the “with a little help” series is back in business for a while. And it will be fun for me. She did not attribute any of the quotes. The first quote was from James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the USA. The next one was disputed, with some thinking it originated with Teddy Roosevelt and others saying Fred Astaire. After the prayer, these might be on the lighter side.
Her quote
“Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.”
- Louie Armstrong
The Discussion
Finally, a quote without controversy over the origin.
Louie Armstrong was saying that as long as the fire within a musician is still kindled, there will be music.
The last Scripture above is from the destruction of Babylon. I think there will be a combination of factors leading to the music stopping there. The musical instruments might be destroyed. The musicians might be dead. But I think God is getting at the fact that the spark that keeps Babylon alive and vibrant will die when Babylon is totally destroyed. The center of evil in this world will be utterly destroyed, and the spark in the hearts of evil men will be quenched.
So, from that aspect, there will be music until the End Times, and then near the end of that. And music will continue in Heaven. There will be a lot of music there.
Our son is a musician, and he has had one problem after another as a music teacher in elementary, middle school, and high school. He has developed a disability that prevents him from teaching, but he can still play. He is working hard to master more and more musical instruments.
No matter how hard he is knocked down by his disability, the music lives on.
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory
