“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.
- Mark 16:6
There is nothing in the Bible about what happened between Christ’s death and His resurrection in the gospels. Not all the gospels speak of the burial, at least not many details. But in Jewish tradition, the new day started when the sun went down. It was the Sabbath day and their work to prepare the body of Jesus was incomplete. They would have to return Sunday morning.
So what happened over that day and a half? These two songs try to answer that.
Guy Penrod – Then Came the Morning
David Phelps – He’s Alive
I included a third song. For nearly a decade at my home church, I was the only tenor, and this version of All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name started our sunrise service each year. I remember a few tough notes that I do not hear in this recording, but in listening to the men, this version would not be considered easy. It was hard work, but I do not think God would be displeased with a little pride over doing an adequate job. All four parts going in different directions. One going up, another down, one resting, another singing solo, one holding a note, another doing the scales rapidly. And all ending up in the same place.
To God be the Glory.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir – All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
The music tells the story.
He is risen!
He is risen, indeed!
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
