“Regulations regarding defiling skin diseases. Leviticus 13 and 14 deal with laws concerning defiling skin diseases and the cleansing of persons with skin diseases and objects with molds. These skin diseases referred to any scaly or eruptive skin condition. The term was used to designate a number of diseases, perhaps including ringworm, fungus and psoriasis. The priests were responsible for diagnosing defiling skin diseases and determining whether an individual was healed. An individual diagnosed as having a defiling skin disease by the priest was pronounced unclean and was forced to live in isolation. The isolated person engaged in mourning rituals, such as wearing torn clothing (Lev 10:6), since his illness was viewed as being linked with the power of death. Inanimate objects, including garments (vv. 47–59) and houses (Lev 14:33–57), also might be diagnosed as defiled and might also be identified as fungus or mildew.”
- Dorothy Kelley Patterson, General Editor, NIV Woman’s Study Bible (Helen Rhea Stumbo, History contributor)
I had to do a little research on this. Defiling diseases did not begin and end at leprosy. They had some of the same things we face today: ringworm, fungus, and psoriasis. The tents had fungus and mildew infestations. What about black mold?
These chapters are mentioned here in that the hair color was significant. The question of having a blonde or redhead seems to be unthinkable. Think about it. With our DNA we are dealing with many, many generations of marriages that can introduce any number of variations in our children.
When the Law was handed to Moses, there was no spreading out and subduing the world until after the language was confused at the Tower of Babel. Thus, a black hair would be expected to be the normal color.
But in doing a Google AI search, there were a variety of diseases that could cause white or gray hairs and yellow hair can be formed due to xanthotrichia, caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency or protein deficiency.
The only one of these that I can remember seeing firsthand was alopecia errata. When we first moved to Germany when I was stationed there, my wife’s hair fell out in large clumps, circle of bald spots. When the hair grew back, it was pure white. The hair and the color eventually returned.
The point of isolation is that some of these diseases could be contagious. The rules in Leviticus have a variety of reasons for their inclusion. With modern science finding ways to prepare food safely and test for various pathogens, some of these rules may still be of valid concern, but there is preparation techniques to fight off such issues.

Hair comes in a variety of thicknesses and colors these days.
As you get older though, gray and white hair color seem to dominate.
I have played around in my fictional story line and a few ladies have adopted some unnatural hair colors for comic effect. The “Purple Four” singing group could easily wear wigs for their performances, especially since they rarely sing for anything other than weddings.
There are a variety of Bible verses that speak of the distinguished look of gray hair, showing that there is experience, and hopefully wisdom in that hair color. Wise sayings are not always true.
But many people want to hide gray hair. They think they are not old enough to display such a hair color.
Is it that they do not feel they have that kind of wisdom?
Or are they denying that they are getting older?

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Michael Kelly Blanchard singing Daddy Cut My Hair. Warning: Have some tissues ready.
Here is Larry Petree with Do Not Cut the Glory. This song is old fashioned and outdated, but I still wish my grandson would get a haircut. I wonder if the parents of the rock musicians of the sixties and seventies felt the same way.
I wanted to put in Hair from the movie of 1979 Hair. I had technical difficulties. We may grow hair long in protest of the establishment, but once there is no standard for hair length, is it a meaningful protest?
So instead, here is Larry singing about a lost hairbrush from VeggieTales.
I got my haircut today because my scalp itched. I like it short, mostly for that reason. The barber did not have a lot to do, but he charged me the usual rate.
