Blessed Assurance

Fanny Crosby may have written Blessed Assurance many years ago.  The words may be a little strange to the younger generations, but it is the song I’d like sung at my funeral.  My mother loved Fanny Crosby hymns.  She had the church pianist play a medley of Fanny Crosby hymns at her funeral, but Fanny Crosby wrote the words, not the music.  I want people to hear those words.

  1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

    • Refrain:
      This is my story, this is my song,
      Praising my Savior all the day long;
      This is my story, this is my song,
      Praising my Savior all the day long.
  2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
    Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
    Angels, descending, bring from above
    Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
  3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,
    I in my Savior am happy and blest,
    Watching and waiting, looking above,
    Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

I am an heir of the salvation that God established.  I have been washed in the blood of Jesus.  I have submitted myself in an “All In” moment and renewed my “All In” when I realize that I have strayed.  I am delighted in what God has provided, regardless of the scarcity at times or the plenty at times.  At times, I have seen few glimpses of what is to come, but I have heard the stories of others.  My father’s father beamed and glowed when he took his last breath.  He didn’t say anything, but those who saw him knew he was looking into the face of his beloved savior.  Regardless of the feelings that we may have on earth regarding justice, in heaven we will bask in God’s mercy.  He will hold us in a big bear hug whispering that He loves us.

But don’t forget the third verse.  We have God with us, even in the bad times.  We can be at rest in the greatest of storms.  Only in our savior Jesus can we be truly happy and blessed.  Jesus told us to look to the sky for His coming again.  Jesus also said that only God is good, but He fills us with His goodness when we are lost in His love.

And then the refrain, I will spend my life telling my story about Jesus and His love, and I will spend eternity praising God all the day long, in a day that never ends.

Even when the bulletin doesn’t list this hymn for next Sunday, may we sing it in our hearts.
