The Mystery of the Shemitah

The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord.  For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.  But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.  Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.  Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.

  • Leviticus 25:1-7

“In order to resolve these concerns, the rabbis sought to come up with ways of avoiding the Shemitah’s more radical requirements.  One of these was based on the idea that the Shemitah applied primarily to Jewish-owned land.  So in the year of the Shemitah, Jewish farmers would sell their land to non-Jews and continued to work.  The selling would be done under an agreement in which the land would revert to the Jewish farmer at the end of the Shemitah year.”

  • Jonathan Cahn, The Mystery of the Shemitah

For those wondering, Shemitah is pronounced “Shem- Mee’-tah” with the accent on the middle syllable.  The Shemitah is the Sabbath Year as established by the Scripture above.

Rabbi Cahn details what the Jews did 3,000 years ago and how the ignoring of the Shemitah leads to destruction.  Rabbi Cahn has spoken to Congress, at their request.  He warns that turning away from God and His commands will ultimately lead to the destruction of our country.

I bristle about equating the end of America with the End Times as described in the book of Revelation, but there may be some truth to that.  The USA calls their president “the leader of the free world.”  I hate that moniker, but it is widely used.  The USA has a prominent role in the United Nations, beyond providing the land for the buildings.  The USA is part of the security council, permanently.  The USA has, in the past, produced more, innovated more, and excelled in more things than any other country.  It was the industrial might of the USA that turned the tide in World War II.  But if the USA were to collapse, whatever remains would still exist.

But, a collapse of the USA could lead to one of the United Nations objectives of a world government.  In such a manner and without a strong leading nation, the other prophecies may start falling into place.  It might be a domino to fall that comes before the End Times.

Rabbi Cahn’s message is a message of repentance and turning to God.  If not, the USA will fall just as Judah fell, leading to the Jews being sent into exile.

But from the quote from his book above, what can we learn when the Jews looked at the requirements for the Shemitah?  They figured a way around leaving their fields fallow.  They figured out ways to retain their slaves.  They figured ways of reclaiming debts that were supposed to be nullified in the year of Jubilee.

They did not live by Faith.

If the USA has not learned by its own mistakes, the USA has not learned by this mistake made by the Jews 3,000 years ago.

Oh, as proof that God is serious about the Shemitah, Rabbi Cahn spends over 200 pages documenting calamities that occurred during or near that time.  World War I, World War II, and the Six-Day War are among the conflicts.  The stock market crashes, or near crashes leading to the Great Depression or recessions of 1929, 2001, and 2008 happened on or near the Shemitah.  In 2008, the day of nullification, where the books should be wiped clean was the very day of that crash, September 29, 2008.

While those in debt today would live riotously knowing that their debt will be nullified at some point, the one holding the note would lose his income.  In both cases, the debtor and the debtee must live in accordance with God’s Law and live by faith that this plan will indeed work.  Neither should abuse the rules or find ways around them.

For a nation, we should turn back to God, repent, and change the evil that this last century has wrought.  But as individuals, we must live by Faith, knowing that God has our best interests in mind.

Tomorrow, I will go a little further.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.

    Sounds like a good read.

  2. Since the entire Law of God was fulfilled by Christ, I find it hard to swallow the thought that the World Wars, Great Depression, and various recessions are judgments from God for failure to follow the Shemitah. Reminders of the coming Judgment, yes, but not connected to a set of commandments that was given only to Old Testament Israel. I look forward to seeing where you are going with this theme. J.
