He Really Loves Us

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.  But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.  No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

  • 1 John 3:1-6

He really loves the hairless bipeds He has created, and always gives back to them with His right hand what he has taken away with His left.”

  • C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

Let’s not worry about the theology in this cute quote from The Screwtape Letters.  Screwtape is a senior demon, and do senior demons really know what God has given with His right hand or whether it was God who took away anything with His left?  Might it be Screwtape’s Master Below who did the taking?

The book of 1 John talks a great deal of love, but it also talks about how God hates sin.  In the NIV, love is mentioned 27 times in this book while hate is mentioned five times.

God made us.  He made us in His image.  Why would He not love us?

God is Holy.  God is pure.  He cannot abide sin, but the blood of Jesus Christ washes away the sin of the true believers.

And to think, for Jesus’ blood to be used to wash away our sin, Jesus died for it.  He laid down His life for ours.  We owe Him everything, with just that in mind.  When, in addition, we consider that God created everything, everything is God’s already.  What can we give in return?  Our lives, in service to God.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
