Two Recent Books

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  • Ephesians 6:10-12

I have been using this year of little movement and travel due to COVID restrictions to complete most of the books in our house.  The reason is to claim them read.  Then they can be divided into the books to keep versus the books to sell or give away.  Two of these books were old books that had already been read before, The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Before I finished The Crucible, I realized that there was a strange thread that connected the two books.  The Crucible is a play about the Salem witch trials, but Arthur Miller wrote it as an allegory of McCarthyism.  Animal Farm is an allegory about the Russian Revolution of 1917.  Both dealt with Communism.  In other reading, someone said that the present age wants to call their secular movement anything other than the Communism that it is because the people still have the concept that Communism is bad.  But as a different name, like secular progressivism, it is much nicer.  It is still Communism, and it may be secular, but it is not progressive – more regressive to Communism than progressing to any other thing.

I ended up doing a lot of speed reading through the books.  I found them to be relevant to today’s political mess.  Will we have a swine like Napoleon (Linen) rise to take power and then depose Snowball (Trotsky) spreading fake news about Snowball?  Or is that going on as we speak?

And everyone agrees that McCarthyism was barbaric, but what did he target?  He knew that much of Hollywood was liberal.  He knew that people flocked to the movies.  By the time that his purge began, television was starting to proliferate from thousands of homes to millions.  These media outlets were a perfect breeding ground for liberal ideas that could endanger the constitution and the government of the United States.  He also attacked homosexuality, again spearheaded among those in Hollywood.

And today, Hollywood has been the mouthpiece of liberal thinking and LGBTQ rights, with the tools for indoctrination and brainwashing.  While McCarthy’s techniques may have been barbaric, he had astute observational skills.  He saw the degradation of our society and he wished to cut it off at the root.

Yet, when sin becomes popular and ignoring God becomes the rage, does anyone listen to the prophets?  Just read through the minor prophets.  Will you listen to gloom and doom while the band is playing and you are being invited to the orgy?

The present world has become so insane, that it might take a despot like Joe McCarthy to stand up to Napoleon and all his army.  But then what will we have?  Will we trade one evil for another?

The only true solution to the themes of these two books is to turn back to God, but if we do not repent soon, it will be too late.  Napoleon will have become supreme ruler of the animal farm and no court will accept a trial of a witch, whether she/he/it/”they” is one or not.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
