Our Justice or God’s Justice

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”  A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.  When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”  With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

  • John 19:28-30

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

  • Romans 6:10

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

  • Jude 1:3

I have a question?  When Jesus said, “It is finished,” what did He mean by “it?”

Some could simply state that since Jesus bowed His head and gave up His spirit, “It” meant His life.  And notice the wording.  Jesus said elsewhere that no one TOOK His life, but that He gave it up for us.  In this wording, Jesus, after allowing them to put Him on the cross, gave up His spirit.  Even hanging from the cross, Jesus was still in control.

I heard a sermon that the “it” was the payment for the sins of the elect.  To put it another way, Jesus came to pay the sin penalty, and that penalty was then paid in full.  Most pastors would tell you that at that moment Satan was defeated – that all since then, Satan’s efforts are in vain – that Satan is in his dead throes.  But he can still tempt people away from God.  The secular world, at the present time, totally ignores God, thanks to Satan’s efforts.

But let’s think of justice.  We like to think that God should follow our thinking because we understand justice.  Of course, our thoughts on justice stem from what was imprinted within us, that part of our being that really does know that God exists and is the creator of it all.

No, God can get angry with Holy Anger, and not exhibit “bad” emotions – and we fail at that miserably, even when we are angry at the evil in world.  Just as God is angry with Holy Anger, He is also just with Holy Justice.  Jesus paid the price.  Jesus defeated Satan.  Jesus “finished it.”  And God has let us sinful beings reproduce more generations of sinful people for nearly 2,000 years AFTER it was finished.

Does that even make sense?!?!?!

If each of us were running this show, Jesus would die, it would be finished, and then Satan goes into the lake of fire – right then – do not pass GO – do not collect $200 or any souls for that matter.  The End!!!  Finished!!!  Now, that is truly finished!!!

I know.  You are saying that I am being harsh, but you should be honest.  We each want swift justice.  Let us suppose you went before the judge and the judge sentenced you to life imprisonment for your crimes.  When do you go to prison?  Right then!!!!  The judge does not say, “Go on with your bad self and I will have you go to jail in a couple thousand years.  Have fun, now!!!”

If the judge ever said that, he’d probably blow you a kiss instead of hammering the gavel on his desk.  Okay, the judge might be female; read that last sentence, if you must, “he/she” but please do not end it with “amen and a-women.”  This politically correct garbage is getting out of hand, and it is getting stupid, too.

No, Jesus warned His disciples that He did not know when the end would be, only the Father knows.  But why?  Why prolong the agony?!  What is the difference between ending it 2,000 years ago and letting life go on OR ending it right then and there, 2,000 years ago, since Satan was defeated?

The difference is … You!

God kept life on this earth going so that we could have the grand opportunity of becoming the adopted sons and daughters of almighty God.  I do not know about you, but that makes me feel loved.  Sure, there might be millions of others, but …

A little over 100 years ago, they stopped fighting the “war to end all wars.”  I remember a comedian who asked, “If it was the ‘war to end all wars,’ why did they give it a number?”  But think about it.  Many thought we had finally become so depraved that we involved most of the world in one giant battle for supremacy.  Does that not sound like “End Times” stuff?  If God said one hundred years ago that enough was enough, none of us would have the opportunity of accepting Jesus as our Savior.

God is keeping this cosmic dance going for “the one” – that last “one” of the elect.  Is it you?

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
