Lonesome Tonight?

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

  • Genesis 2:18

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

  • Proverbs 18:24

“How many lonely people there are today!  God did not create man to live in miserable inner loneliness.  In that first Eden, God Himself came down to keep the man He had made from being lonely.  One of the most heartening things Jesus said to His disciples was, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).  He came to restore fellowship between man and God, and to take away human loneliness.  Jesus Christ will take away loneliness from your soul.  He will be your companion and friend.”

  • Billy Graham, Day by Day with Billy Graham (Devotion for 2 November)

Elvis often asked the question, “Are you lonesome tonight?”

Sorry, no more.  Elvis … has left the building.

But oh, how a person can age before your eyes when there is a video record.  Yikes!  It is great being anonymous.

When I was younger, I was in such a hurry to find a girl that was willing to kiss me.  I was indeed rather pathetic.  But during the lockdown this past Spring, I enjoyed the solitude.  It wore thin, but it took a few months.

I wrote recently that we are never alone with Jesus and the Billy Graham devotion shares those sentiments, but a few months without physical contact can lead to stresses that we did not know that we have.

For man, God made woman, the perfect companion.  Marriages are never perfect, because in our fallen world with a sin nature, we are not perfect.  Odd how too many marriages break up because the spouse was not perfect.  Maybe those houses had no mirrors.

But due to our imperfections, the best friend that we can ever have is the One who will always be there, Jesus.

And one day, we will each meet Jesus face-to-face.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
