Truth versus Relativism

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  • John 8:31-32

They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.  Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.  As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.  For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

  • John 17:16-19

My recent “Heavy Topics, Made Lighter” post, I Object to His Subjectivity, has weighed heavily upon me ever since writing and scheduling it.

First, for the Scriptures above. Jesus speaks to His disciples and says that His teaching it truth and the truth will set you free. We all wish freedom. Why do so few choose Jesus? The second Scripture comes from Jesus’ prayer the night He was betrayed. He was praying for each of us to be sanctified, and that can only occur by the truth. The word “truth” is mentioned 137 times in the NIV, with 102 times in the New Testament and 23 times in the book of John, where Jesus says the word at least a dozen times.

Jesus is the Truth.  There is something called truth.  Two plus two is really equal to four.  You may have to fly above the clouds, haze, and smog, but the sky is blue.  Even when the demon liberals change the definitions of the words.  These things are still true.

And as for a former president who said that it is all according to what your definition of “is” is, I have news for him.  The definition of “is” is “is.”

Protagoras made good money, according to history, by saying whatever it took to get his client the win in the legal battle.  Truth had nothing to do with it.  And the erosion of knowledge, and thus sanity, is probably why Socrates and Plato were so against the Sophists, like Protagoras.  Why have philosophical argument if everyone holds to their relative truth?  And Protagoras created a cancer within our world that has grown ever since.  We live in the post-Truth era, but there will always be truth.

Truth must exist.  Think about it.  Oh, wait, if truth is relative, can thinking even occur?  Truth is the foundation of knowledge.  If we know something, anything, then we have truth with regard to that thing.  It cannot be relative.  Your truth cannot be your truth and be opposed to my truth.  If a limb from a tree falls in your backyard, maybe weighed down by too much ice, and you break off a piece of the limb, you have a stick.  If your neighbor tells you that you have a butterfly, he’s crazy!!!!  That is not truth.

But if all is relative, there is no absolute.  No word has definition because it is relative.  Throw out the dictionary.  It is useless, although the meaning of each word is then meaningless due to its relativity.  How can you then say that useless is useless or is is is anymore?  Education is meaningless, because whatever you think is truth is your truth, regardless whether it is real or fantasy.

I posted Math and God last October.  I had a video in it where the speaker was illustrating that the existence of math was proof of God.  Our very existence is proof of God, if you look deep enough.  Science is proof of God, for it is lunacy to think that all this perfect order (perfect until humans screwed it up) could happen by accident.  In fact, evolution and millions of years of the universe are concepts that have a mountain of evidence against them, but those who wish to ignore God hold to their personal relative truth, just to thumb their nose at the God they do not believe in.

So, what do we have?  If truth is relative, up to each individual, then there is no knowledge, no reason to have schools, no reason to read, no means of understanding anything that we do read, thus no way for the Bible to teach the reader…

And this lack of concrete knowledge adds to the anxiety that seems to be more of a pandemic than the present pandemic.  We are afraid because we do not know, and we can never know for sure if everyone has their own relative truth.

It is not the governments of the world that are the enemy.  They just do as the enemy instructs.  This is Satan’s final stand against God.  Satan has lost, but knowledge is the final battlefield.

There is concrete knowledge and truth.  It can only be found in God, the Creator of all things.  We need to return to the source of truth, the Truth Himself.  He is the foundation of Truth, the bedrock of all knowledge, for He created it.

God is real.  God is alive.  God is sovereign, regardless of what the secular world thinks.  And God will reign supreme, regardless of how much we try to “fix” this world while ignoring Him.

There is Truth.  There is truth.  And you can have both.  Jesus is knocking.  Will you let Him in?

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
