I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
- 1 Timothy 1:1-4
“About the general connection between Christianity and politics, our position is more delicate. Certainly we do not want men to allow their Christianity to flow over into their political life, for the establishment of anything like a really just society would be a major disaster.”
- C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
Again, I wonder if our world’s governments are reading the wrong books or reading things backwards.
It is as if they have taken this quote to be the Gospel Truth, when it is supposed to be a senior demon, Screwtape, writing to his nephew and junior demon, Wormwood. Screwtape is telling Wormwood how to best screw things up, not make things better. To Screwtape, a “just society” would indeed be a disaster, the exact opposite of what their “Father Below”, meaning Satan, would want.
We need a large dose of Christianity flowing over into our political lives, before it is too late for it to matter.
With a new executive administration getting things set up, the news has been sparse. The prayer team that I belong to has been sending out profiles on all the newly elected members of the US Senate and US House of Representatives. When it comes to church affiliation, many say none, some say Christian, some say Baptist or Catholic or another denomination. I have only seen one profile that said “church elder, organizer and supervisor of the soup kitchen, Sunday school teacher, …” Maybe it was the food bank instead of the soup kitchen. Which of these profiles is believable? Is the “Christian” devout and not wanting to state a specific denomination or did he say “Christian” to gain a few extra votes when he really cannot spell the word “Christian” without help from spell-check? Is the church elder lying about the whole thing? If the data is carefully researched, do any of these people attend services or actually help out in the soup kitchen? Would they know which end of the spoon to use when serving?
And yet, we trust these yahoos instead of trusting God. Hmmm. Did we slip into a parallel universe where Screwtape is in charge?
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
