“My people are fools;
they do not know me.
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.
They are skilled in doing evil;
they know not how to do good.”
- Jeremiah 4:22
“No man is more pathetic than he who is in great need and is not aware of it. Remember Samson? Standing there in the valley of Sorek, surrounded by the lords of the Philistines, ‘… he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.’ It has been truly said, ‘No man is so ignorant as he who know nothing and knows not that he knows nothing. No man is so sick as he who has a fatal disease and is not aware of it. No man is so poor as he who is destitute, and yet thinks he is rich.’ The pitiable thing about the Pharisees was not so much their hypocrisy as it was their utter lack of knowledge of how poor they actually were in the sight of God. There is always something pathetic about a man who thinks he is rich when he is actually poor, who thinks he is good when he is actually vile, who thinks he is educated when he is actually illiterate.”
- Billy Graham, Day by Day with Billy Graham (Devotion for 12 August)
I have been seeing countless articles, blog posts, etc. that talk about how the world has gone totally mad. But maybe we should shift that to “foolish.” The growing trend around the world is to push the secular agenda, and the more hostile the attitude toward Christianity the better. It has been said that many countries of the world only single out Christianity as the problematic religion. Other religions have a more lethal stance against certain groups that demand inclusivity, but nothing is said about that. In fact, some are embraced. I hope I am no longer around when there are three world powers flexing their muscles as to who is in charge. The secular world could band together under the UN flag, but most of those countries owe tons of money to the People’s Republic of China. China could rule the world through financial and business means. And the Muslim world, at least some of the powers there, are pushing for the next Ottoman Empire. All three would gladly irradicate Christianity, but then God will have a say about that. In spite of government oppression, the Chinese Christian church is growing.
In the USA, the latter half of the 20th Century marked an alarming decline at the governmental level away from Christian values. Recently, a member of Congress argued a proposed bill by quoting Deuteronomy. The response was that God had no place in the proceedings.
If that is true, the USA is as good as dead. When will someone unplug the life support? The separation of church and state had nothing to do with what has been interpreted but preventing a state-run religion. Yet, the secular movement has more religious fervor in ridding the nation of Christianity than you usually see on Sunday morning in nearly any Christian church in the country. And what are we worshipping? A government that wants to totally ignore God in exchange for a loss of our freedom and a government that will keep us poor, but who cares since everyone else is poor, except for the politicians that we elected some time back, living in their gated communities.
We must not rely on any government, but in Christ alone. People will let you down. And the more power the government gets, the less freedom you will have. But God is faithful.
Is there time left to repent? Jeremiah kept speaking the truth and the king was very unkind to him in return. And eventually, after the king was blinded and sent into exile, Jeremiah joined the governor in an exile of their own in Egypt. Not even the prophets will be spared.
What is so toxic about the message that God loves us and He wishes to draw us away from self-destruction?
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
