The True Enemy

Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

  • 1 Chronicles 21:1

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.  The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan!  The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”
Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.  The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”
Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”

  • Zechariah 3:1-4

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  • Ephesians 6:10-12

NOTE: In the following quote, Screwtape, a senior demon, is writing to Wormwood, a junior demon and Screwtape’s nephew, about the “Enemy.”  In the case for these demons, the “Enemy” is God. God may be Satan’s adversary, but God is the best friend we could ever have.

“Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”

  • C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

I have gotten angry, perturbed, upset, frustrated, etc. with a lot of people around the world lately.  It is very hard to take Paul’s admonition that we are not at war with flesh and blood.  We are at war with the powers of the dark world.  Our enemy is Satan.

Why am I so angry at people?

They seem to embrace and take pride in the darkness.  They seem to want to strap on jet packs and rocket away from God, away from Truth, and indeed, away from sanity, all for having a good time to fill the void in their lives that can only be filled by Jesus Christ.

And should I hesitate in saying that our enemy is Satan?  There are those who would have me arrested and thrown in the asylum for believing in Satan.

Odd, it is Satan who has shielded their eyes against his existence.

It is hard taking Paul’s advice.  When I get angry at the situation, I see the faces of those who espouse that view, to praise and glorify sin and flaunt it in God’s face.

But remember when your child said something that was so horrid and disrespectful and then they smiled as if to say. “I dare you!”, for they were horribly proud of themselves?  You wanted to slap the smile off their face so hard that their face circumnavigated the globe and when the face came back by again, slap it in the opposite direction.  I can think of a few of those times, and that still comes to mind.

But did you do that?  They might have been punished, but you loved them.

Let us be honest.  If we created a world like this one, we would want robots that would always do exactly as we commanded.  But then, the world would get very boring.  There would be no spontaneity.  It would be the same people doing the same thing all the time.  If we liked the Mona Lisa, the artist robot would create thousands of exact duplicates of the Mona Lisa.

And most importantly, none of those robots would love us, even though we programmed every one of them to say so.

No, God gave us free will which means we can be very stupid and go against God’s will.  When God created Adam and Eve in his own image, He knew that they would not choose wisely, but God knew that those who truly sought Him, the Creator, would truly love Him.

Those people that we consider the enemies of mankind are simply people who have not chosen wisely or those who have not yet met the Savior.  They are not the enemy.  The puppet masters who manipulate the world leaders from behind the scenes are not the enemy either.  The enemy is the devil, Satan, the power of the dark world.

But God is light.  When God’s Light shines in the New Earth, there will be no shadow, for there will be no place where God’s Light does not reach.

Realize this.  We are at war.  Our enemy is Satan.  But God’s Light will destroy Satan.  When Jesus died on the cross and then arose again, Satan had lost, and we are closer to the End Times, when God will stand in judgment, than we were when this post was written.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
